The state treasurer is the constitutional custodian of public funds. The office manages the state’s banking, investments, debt, and credit rating, and administers the Public Treasurers’ Investment Fund (PTIF) for more than 700 local governments and state agencies. The treasurer also oversees the Unclaimed Property Division, leads statewide financial education initiatives, and serves on over 20 boards and commissions that shape Utah’s fiscal policy.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Policy and Communications Deputy, the legislative intern will:

  • Track legislation relevant to the Treasurer’s Office;
  • Attend legislative committee meetings, hearings, and floor sessions;
  • Prepare notes and summaries;
  • Coordinate meetings with legislators;
  • Conduct research and draft briefing materials on public finance, financial education, investments, office history, and related policy issues;
  • Support financial education initiatives;
  • Attend board and commission meetings;
  • Support logistical and administrative needs of the office during the legislative session; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned to advance the mission of the office.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a college/university program in public policy, economics, political science, business, finance, communications, or a related field;
  • Strong writing and analytical skills;
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail;
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment;
  • Communicates clearly, concisely, and professionally, both verbally and in writing; and
  • Demonstrates professionalism and discretion when handling confidential information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment in or completion of an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite.
  • Ability to work full-time during the Legislative Session (January–March).

Supplemental Information

  • This is a temporary, non-benefited position.
  • Work will be performed primarily at the State Capitol.
  • Professional attire is expected.
