POSITION SUMMARY:
The Allen-Stevenson School in New York City seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic teacher of English for a full-time leave replacement. The position will run from April 3 2023 to June 16 2023. Qualified candidates will have experience teaching English and a demonstrated commitment to and love for working with middle school-aged students. The successful candidate has a strong background in and knowledge of teaching English, works to build an inclusive classroom, integrates technology, collaborates and demonstrates high energy and creativity. An understanding and appreciation of how boys learn best, especially the role that personal connection plays, is essential. The successful candidate will be able to implement the established curriculum under the guidance of the English Department Head while also injecting their personal creativity and style.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the School’s educational mission and vision by challenging, engaging, and nurturing students towards deeper learning
- Work closely with the English Department Head to implement the sixth grade curriculum
- Develop and coordinate our English curricula with other faculty that prioritizes:
- A commitment to choosing and teaching texts representing multiple perspectives
- Developing age-appropriate reading and writing skills
- Instructing students in grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary
- Utilizing literature to consider morals and ethics and to help students develop empathy
- Finding opportunities for cross-disciplinary connections
- Managing classroom procedures and student behavior
- Nurture meaningful connections with students so they feel welcome, valued, understood and seen
- Use technology effectively and appropriately to enhance student learning in the classroom and for virtual lessons as necessary
- Assess student performance using formative and summative tools as well as rubrics, and provide regular academic updates, grades and comments for report cards
- Serve as a grade-level advisor, including conducting and organizing parent conferences
- Collaborate with division and team members with flexibility, creativity and humor to develop program and ensure student success
- Supervise clubs, class trips, daily recess and lunch duties
- Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion, with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues
- Perform additional duties and participate in the life of the School

Reports to: Head of Upper Division and English Department Head
FLSA: Exempt, full-time
Education: Masters degree preferred
Experience: 3 years teaching at the middle school level
Compensation: Prorated, based on an annualized salary of $69,340 - $94,300 commensurate with education and experience
