POSITION OVERVIEW
The Advocacy Director implements and oversees Cal Voices’ coordinated advocacy activities, focusing on the needs and priorities of two key constituencies in California’s Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS): (1) Peer Support workers (Peers); and (2) Consumers of public behavioral health services (Clients). To accomplish this, the Advocacy Director manages Cal Voices’ California Association of Peer Professionals (CAPP), which advances the collective interests of Peers throughout the state. The Advocacy Director also builds and maintains the agency’s grassroots coalition of Clients, advocates, civil rights organizations, and other like-minded groups and individuals who share Cal Voices’ core values and policy positions, and activates members of this coalition to participate in public decisions and make their voices heard. The Advocacy Director works closely with Cal Voices’ Executive Leadership Team, including the Executive Director, Associate Director, Policy Director, and Education Director, providing critical feedback and guidance to the agency, educating managers, advocates, and stakeholders about the impacts of behavioral health laws and policies on the agency, its programs, its employees, and the people it serves. The Advocacy Director represents Peers and Clients in public meetings and hearings, develops creative messaging and educational campaigns, leads collective advocacy efforts, and manages contracts that fund these activities. Accordingly, the Advocacy Director must demonstrate advanced digital literacy and technology skills, and subject matter expertise in behavioral health advocacy, Peer employment issues, outreach/engagement, community organizing, and coalition-building.
