The Advocacy Director oversees all aspects of our advocacy initiatives, with the goal of accomplishing APCC’s mission of improving environmental policies and outcomes for Cape Cod. The Advocacy Director will work primarily at the local, county and state levels, and occasionally on the federal level to build coalitions, partner with traditional and nontraditional allies, advance environmental legislative and regulatory priorities, and support and encourage campaigns to advance water quality improvement projects, land acquisition and protection efforts, land use planning and policy, and to strengthen environmental laws and regulations that affect Cape Cod. The Advocacy Director will be expected to be active and engaged with local, county, state and federal government and our partner organizations. APCC’s advocacy efforts are directly informed by our science and data-based programmatic work, necessitating close coordination between the advocacy program and all areas of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES


Manage all aspects of APCC’s advocacy work, in close collaboration with other senior staff, particularly the Executive Director.


Act as APCC lead in the review and comment of major development proposals, state, local, county and federal regulatory proposals, and projects that are of regional interest and potential environmental impact.


In collaboration with the Executive Director, and Program Managers, establish and implement and annual advocacy agenda


Develop and implement strategies to advocate for APCC’s policy priorities before local, county and state governments, as well as the public


Engage and work in close coordination with traditional and nontraditional allies; build and support coalitions; serve on task forces and other advisory bodies


Prepare and manage departmental budget and strategic planning for APCC’s advocacy work


As necessary, support litigation to advance APCC’s objectives.


Support the development of grant applications and other development activities.


QUALIFICATIONS


Advanced degree preferred in law, public policy, environmental policy, or public administration


At least 10 years’ experience in environmental advocacy, including state-level lobbying and administrative processes around legislation, regulation, permitting, and other government decision-making


Political or grassroots campaign experience is a plus


Knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks applicable to land use and protection, water quality, and the environmental project permitting and review process.


Understanding of, and experience in, Cape Cod regional environmental issues is desirable.


Excellent oral and written communication skills


Proven ability to develop new ideas and initiatives to address long standing as well as emerging environmental challenges; manage teams; and work collaboratively across an organization


Demonstrated high level of professionalism


Demonstrated commitment to APCC’s mission


Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other online systems


Able to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
This is a full-time position based in Dennis with competitive salary and benefits, including generous paid time off, and employer contributions to health insurance premiums. APCC’s office operates on a hybrid remote/in-person schedule. Annual salary range for this position is $80,000 to $91,000.
