Job Title: Assistant Field Director

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the Field Director in recruiting, hiring, developing and supervising a team of Canvassers, Trainers and Field Managers committed to meeting Working America’s ambitious goals to advance economic justice for workers while meeting all basic Field Manager responsibilities. Assistant Field Directors may also be assigned to run offices or campaigns, or perform specific duties of a Field Director on a temporary or interim basis.
REPORTS TO: Field Director
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Responsibilities are as assigned by the Field Director. These include but are not limited to the following:
Core Daily Responsibilities
Set up for canvass teams and coordinate turf
Facilitate daily team meetings including announcements and introduction of outside speakers
Make nightly deposits
Oversee organizational vehicle upkeep and maintenance
Recruitment and hiring:
Write and place job ads
Participate in the development of office recruitment plan
Conduct job calls and interviews
Effectively recommend hiring of canvass staff
Training and staff development:
Canvass and work directly with all field staff
Conduct field evaluations of canvass staff to ensure quality organizing interactions with Working America members and members of the general public
Identify, train and develop Trainers and Field Managers to meet and exceed the expectations of their job duties
Plan and facilitate Trainer trainings and Field Manager trainings
Observe and train Trainers to meet and exceed expectations of their job
Observe and train Field Managers to meet and exceed expectations of their job
Assist Field Director with staff reviews; evaluate staff
TRAVEL REQUIREMENT:
Mobility is critical to the success of Working America expansion with start-up offices, Field Director office coverage, special campaigns and training of emerging leaders. Assistant Field Directors are expected to be available to travel a minimum of 8 weeks a year as needed. Working America is responsible for the cost of housing, travel, transportation and per diem.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Canvassing or Organizing experience
Management experience, preferably with Working America
Effective communication skills
Ability to work well with a variety of people
Strong problem-solving and leadership skills
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be effective under pressure
Strong administrative skills
Ability to project organizational policies and mission
Evaluate staff for promotion and discipline
Desire to advance within the organization
Ability to learn quickly
Ability to travel required
Ability to relocate preferred
Driver’s license preferred

Salary starts at $37,935 and includes medical insurance and 401(k) with employer contribution.
