Blue Dog Executive Director Job Description

Official Side Role

The Executive Director will report to the Coalition Administration Co-Chair and will help the Coalition achieve its goals, which will include but is not limited to:

● Regularly meet with Blue Dog offices to ensure the Coalition’s activities reflect the will of the Members.

● Represent the Coalition to the Democratic Caucus, various Democratic leadership offices, and with various other caucuses in the Congress.

● Maintain the official budget and execute other administrative tasks, such as e-mail distribution lists, dues collection, schedule meetings and special guests, etc.

● Maintain accurate attendance and minutes at official meetings and co-chair meetings, ensuring proper follow up of Members’ and chiefs’ requests.

● In conjunction with Policy Coordinator and Communications Director, develop and maintain relationships with external partners on behalf of the Coalition.

● Prepare and distribute materials and information helpful to Coalition members and key stakeholders.

● Convene staff-level leadership and external partner meetings regularly to advance the priorities of the Coalition.

● Organize the Coalition’s biennial issues planning conference.

● Execute other duties as assigned by Coalition co-chairs and co-chair chiefs of staff.

Political Role

The Executive Director will report to the Blue Dog PAC Chair and will operate in multiple capacities:

External Relationships & Partners

● Conduct regular outreach to Blue Dog stakeholders promoting candidates and incumbents’ agendas and campaigns.

● Attend and coordinate Blue Dog political meetings and events as appropriate.

● Assist with management of the relationship with the DCCC including the Frontline program for incumbents, redistricting impact and candidate recruitment efforts.

Incumbent Political Support

● Leverage relationships to connect Blue Dog Member campaigns and the Blue Dog PAC with potential supporters.

● Establish relationships and conduct regular check ins with all Blue Dog campaign managers.

Recruitment

● Coordinate recruitment outreach with DCCC and Blue Dog Members.

● Research prospective Blue Dog districts.

● Research prospective Blue Dog candidates.

● Conduct recruitment calls and candidate interviews.

Legislative & Political Liaison

● Monitor legislative activity and facilitate communication of impactful policy decisions for the political team.

Communications Oversight

● Oversee political communications message & strategy; manage external consultant by identifying goals and deliverables.

The ideal candidate must have substantial coalition building experience (3-4 years) with multiple stakeholder groups on Capitol Hill and 5-7 years of campaign experience, must demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in an unpredictable work environment. Strong organizational and time management skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills are also mandatory. The Executive Director will work directly with both the PAC team and the coalition leadership to advance the Blue Dog agenda and ensure the group’s political strength.
