Job Description

The NYC District Office of a progressive New York State legislator is seeking an individual with experience working in government to support communications projects for the office, as well as assist with constituent issues and office operations as needed. Communications responsibilities will include writing public statements, sending regular newsletters via email and print, managing and monitoring social media channels, and working with reporters and journalists. In addition, the role will support staff in responding to constituent needs, including managing individual casework, researching pertinent local issues, liaising with State and local agencies, and maintaining databases and filing systems.

To be successful in this role a candidate should have strong writing and interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to develop and promote messaging on local issues, legislative developments, and political topics. Candidates should have an interest in public service, an understanding of government and public policy, an ability to think creatively, and proficiency in social media platforms and Mailchimp.


About the New York State Assembly: The New York State Assembly consists of 150 members elected from their districts. Alongside the New York State Senate, it forms the legislative branch of the New York state government and works to create laws and establish a state budget. Responsibilities include: 

  • Drafting press releases, statements, print and electronic newsletters, social media content
  • Building and maintaining relationships with press and media outlets
  • Developing communications strategies, including internal briefs and messaging documents 
  • Developing strong relationships with other elected offices, government agencies, and local organizations to assist and respond to local needs and advance policy objectives
  • Engaging with community organizations, leaders, and advocates to identify local needs, develop deep understanding of issues, and implement solutions
  • Representing the Assembly member at meetings and events, including Community Boards, district events, stakeholder meetings, and more, including some nights and weekends  
  • Leading the planning, organization, and operations of office-run events
  • Managing daily calls from constituents, including ongoing case management to resolve concerns, connect them to resources, and coordinate with relevant private actors or public agencies
  • Assisting constituents navigating concerns ranging from social services, education issues, and unemployment concerns to senior issues, health care questions, and more.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think critically, creatively, and quickly
  • Experience developing messaging and written materials to advance strategic goals
  • Bilingual (Spanish) speaker a plus   
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Facebook and Twitter, Mailchimp, and Google Suite
  • Existing relationships with New York State press corps a plus
  • Experience in a local, state or federal government office a plus
  • Experience in constituent relations a plus
  • Experience in management a plus, but not required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to respectfully engage individuals from diverse backgrounds


Job Type: Full Time. The position is located in New York City; no travel will be required. Occasional evening and weekend work required.
