Job Description
The Office of Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) is seeking a creative and self-motivated Communications Director to join his team. The Communications Director is a senior member of the team that reports directly to the Chief of Staff and works collaboratively with Legislative and District leadership. This is a full-time position based in a fast-paced and battleground Washington, DC office.
Ideal candidates have 2-3 years of communications experience with the ability to clearly and concisely distill policy positions into communications assets for a diverse constituency. Occasional evening and weekend work is expected. Hill experience, California ties, and Vietnamese or Spanish fluency are a plus but not required. This is not an entry-level position.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Developing a comprehensive communication strategy to achieve the Member’s legislative and communications priorities.
- Collaborating actively with the legislative and District teams to ensure cohesive messaging on constituent services, policy rollouts, and district events.
- Implementing strategies to best communicate the Congressman’s work through TV, print media, social media, and paid media.
- Drafting communications materials including media advisories, press releases, remarks, op-eds, newsletters, statements, and memos.
- Managing spending on all paid media, including social media ads and boosted posts, physical mailers, and telephone/virtual town halls, working with relevant external vendors.
- Establishing and developing productive relationships with the national and Hill press corps to successfully pitch and field stories, including handling rapid response as needed.
- Expanding the Member’s digital presence, including drafting, editing, graphics, and videos for social media channels and website.
- Managing a Washington, D.C. based Press/Digital Assistant.
