Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09) seeks a Communications Director. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by April 17th, 2026  

Job Expectations: 

The Communications Director is expected to work closely with the Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, District Staff, and Digital Manager to develop and execute a comprehensive and aggressive strategic plan to inform constituents and the media on issues that are important to the Congressman. This includes making media pitches, organizing press events, and reviewing, drafting, and finalizing statements, press releases, media advisories, and other messaging (e.g., social media).  Washington state ties are a plus! Salary is $90k+.

Job Duties: 

· Develop and implement overall media and communications strategy 

· Work with both national and local press to expand reach and presence 

· Organize and coordinate events with the media, including working closely with the district staff to organize in-district events 

· Draft press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and statements; book media interviews with print, online, local and national TV outlets 

· Oversee the press team in leading a social media strategy across a variety of platforms 

· Work with the COS, DCOS, LD, Digital Manager and LC to build out a robust franked communications program 

· Coordinate with the House Armed Services Committee Communications staff 

· Coordinate new media opportunities such as podcasts, influence collaborations, and digital engagements

Requirements: 

· A successful track record of developing a communication strategy for a Member of Congress, elected official, federal agency, private, and/or non-profit organization  

· Able to make split-second decisions and develop communications under tight deadlines 

· Politically savvy and comfortable navigating difficult situations with press and staff 

· Strong written and verbal communication skills 

· Expertise in advising others on a communication strategy and influencing coverage; have vast on the record experience with the media & experience booking interviews with print, online and local and national tv outlets.  

· Time management skills, ability to work under pressure, and comfortable balancing multiple responsibilities at once 

· Ability to collaborate and work with a team 

· Attention to detail 

· Experience building and maintaining relationships with local and national press corps

· Prior management experience
