Job Description
Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05) seeks an innovative communications leader and digital strategist capable of adapting and executing a media strategy that responds to the moment. They can anticipate problems and offer solutions and are familiar with key New York City and local news outlets. This position is based in D.C. and reports to the Chief of Staff.
The ideal candidate is native to the internet, thrives in fast-paced environments, is comfortable working under deadlines, confident interacting with reporters, highly collaborative and eager to work with staff, and has a passion for storytelling and video production.
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborates closely with the Deputy Chief of Staff on crafting cohesive and engaging messaging across platforms;
- Develops and implements media, communications, public relations, and social media strategies;
- Drafts regular commentary and op-eds for local news outlets on important subject matter and current events;
- Develops and executes press conferences and public events;
- Oversees the creation and distribution of the Congressman’s newsletters and press releases, and produces franked communications;
- Coordinates with the House Foreign Affairs Committee communications team regularly;
Education/Experience:
This is not an entry level position. A bachelor’s degree and 3-4 years of professional communications experience is required. District ties are preferred.
Qualifications Required:
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
- Strong communication skills;
- Understanding of local and national news outlets;
- Thorough knowledge of the legislative process, procedures and organization of the House;
- Fluent in video and graphic editing software.
