Job Description
Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, extraordinary attention to detail, strong critical thinking skills, a good sense of humor, sharp political instincts, and an ability to work under tight deadlines. The Communications Director reports directly to the Chief of Staff and is a key leader within the staff. This is not an entry level position.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working directly with the Member, Chief of Staff, Legislative Director and District Director to execute legislative and messaging strategic goals
- Developing and executing the office’s communications plans across media including national, state, and local press, messaging guidance, events, and social media
- Updating and maintaining Member’s website
- Working directly with the Member to prepare and staff him for interviews, Floor speeches, speaking engagements, press conferences, public events, etc.
- Fielding and responding to all incoming media inquiries
- Drafting written materials including press statements, quotes, remarks, op-eds, press releases and advisories, talking points, etc.
- Oversee an aggressive paid communications program including mass communications tools including weekly newsletters, surveys, digital ads, radio ads, texts, robocalls, mailers, etc.
- Establish and maintain productive relationships with local, state and Hill press corps
- Pitching and landing media coverage to align with the Member’s strategic goals
- Collaborating with the legislative team on writing and editing committee remarks and developing press plans for legislative rollouts
Qualifications include:
- 3+ years’ experience in political communications
- Experience with franked communications tools and familiarity with House franking rules
- Demonstrated record of establishing and maintaining relationships with press
- Understanding of Central Valley, California, and national politics as well as relevant media landscapes
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-visibility office
- Ability to work flexible hours as required to support Member’s objectives
- Central Valley/California ties and Spanish language skills are a plus but not required
