Communications Director – Office of Congressman Gabe Vasquez (NM-02)
The Office of Congressman Gabe Vasquez seeks a dynamic and experienced Communications Director to lead the office’s strategic communications and messaging operations. The ideal candidate will have strong media and digital communications experience, excellent writing and editing skills (including proficiency in Spanish proofreading), and a deep understanding of working in a battleground office.
The Communications Director reports to the Chief of Staff and works closely with the Legislative and District Directors to execute a comprehensive external communications strategy that highlights the Congressman’s work in New Mexico and Washington, D.C.
This is not an entry-level position. Ideal candidates will have experience working in a fast-paced environment and management of a team. The role is based in Washington, D.C., and will require periodic travel to New Mexico.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead an aggressive strategic communications plan across earned, social, and owned media platforms;
- Serve as the media contact for the Congressman;
- Oversee all public messaging, including drafting and approving press releases, media advisories, talking points, speeches, opinion editorials, video scripts, newsletters, and social media content;
- Supervise the Press/Digital Assistant and Communications Fellow, ensuring quality content across platforms in both English and Spanish;
- Staff the Congressman for media interviews, press conferences, public events, and prepare detailed media briefings;
- Pitch and respond to media inquiries across local, state, national, and Spanish-language outlets;
- Coordinate with policy and district staff to amplify legislative, constituent services, and district priorities;
- Manage and monitor mass communications tools including newsletters, telephone town halls, franked mail, and digital advertising;
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 - 5 years of communications experience, including work on Capitol Hill or political campaigns;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail;
- Spanish proficiency, particularly the ability to proofread and edit content;
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
- Familiarity with digital media trends, graphic/video content creation, and franking guidelines;
- Understanding of New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District and its unique political landscape;
