COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR— Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34)

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) seeks an experienced and creative communications professional to serve as Communications Director. The Communications Director reports to the Chief of Staff and works closely with the Member, Chief of Staff, and legislative and district teams to develop and execute robust earned and paid communications plans. This job is based in the Washington, D.C. office with periodic travel to South Texas.

Responsibilities include maintaining relationships with national and local reporters, replying to press inquiries, and proactively pitching stories; drafting and editing statements and press releases; developing media strategies to roll out legislative wins; spearheading communications components of district outreach and events; running an aggressive and responsive social media program in concert with the Digital Media Manager; writing op-eds, talking points, and speeches; mentoring and supervising the Digital Media Manager; and working collaboratively with District Office and legislative staff to amplify the office’s work. The Communications Director will also plan, budget, and execute an aggressive franked communications and 499 program.

Candidates must understand the demands of a battleground congressional office and possess digital acumen and sound political judgement. The ideal candidate has superb written and oral communications skills; has experience successfully pitching media outlets and maintaining relationships with the press corps; and proven ability to plan and execute an aggressive mass communications plan. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to public service; maintain composure under pressure; ability to work as part of a dynamic team; an ability to make quick strategic decisions and develop messaging under tight deadlines, and knowledge of federal agencies and the political process. This position necessitates a willingness to work non-traditional hours, and a keen understanding of House franking rules.

Applicants should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant communications experience. Prior experience working for Congress or elected officials is preferred. South Texas ties and/or Spanish fluency are preferred but not required.
