Are you a creative, passionate student eager to gain hands-on experience in communications, storytelling, and community engagement? AARP Georgia is seeking a Communications Intern to support our mission of empowering people to choose how they live as they age and building stronger communities. In this paid internship, you’ll assist with real-world projects, including writing articles for the Georgia Red Clay Report newsletter and AARP Georgia website, creating social media content, and analyzing digital metrics to help shape engagement strategies. You’ll also draft press releases, attend events to capture content, and collaborate on podcast production—from scheduling guests to developing interview questions. This role offers the chance to grow your skills in writing, digital media, and event coverage. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of Fall 2025 and will run through the end of the year, with the possibility of extending additional semesters.

Responsibilities

• Apply strategic, analytical, and creative thinking to help promote AARP Georgia events, advocate for state and federal policy issues, and inform diverse, statewide audiences
• Research federal issues and AARP initiatives, conduct necessary interviews, and write social media, newsletter, and website content with a local audience in mind
• Create graphics and copy for the state’s social media accounts
• Pull and learn to interpret social media and newsletter analytics and assist in developing strategies for improvement.
• Attend events and produce content and photos for AARP Georgia’s digital publications
• Assist in writing press releases and media alerts, often taking AARP national news releases, adding a local tie, and releasing them to our local media
  
  

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university, be considered a rising undergraduate junior or senior, graduate student, or postdoctoral student, and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship
• Pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field
• Must be an excellent news and feature story writer, who is coachable and open to editorial guidance
• Must be proficient at Associated Press Style Guidelines
• Must be a self-starter and adaptable with the ability to work under tight deadlines
• Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
• Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation
• Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canva programs
• Familiarity with creating and editing videos, as well as knowledge of multiple social media platforms, is a plus

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation And Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
