Summary

Assists the Communications & Public Engagement team with a variety of day-to-day external and internal communications, public relations, media relations, video production, audio/visual assignments, strategic campaigns, and other tasks as assigned by staff.

Essential Functions

  • Help disseminate external and/or internal information from the C&PE Department;
  • Assist in set up of public meetings, press conferences, video shoots and City sponsored events as needed;
  • Help with social media monitoring;
  • Participate in brainstorming creative aspects and strategies of marketing, public relations and social media campaigns;
  • Assist in Print Shop as needed;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate in Journalism, Public Relations, or a communications-related field;
  • Strong oral and written communication;
  • Proactive and detail-oriented;
  • Understanding of social media platforms;
  • Knowledge of copywriting and editing,

Internship Details:

Start date: January 2026. Exact start date to be determined by chosen applicant's availability.

Hours: 20 hours per week, to be decided by applicant's schedule and the needs of the department. Working hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge Of

  • Principles and practices of public and/or media relations;
  • Adobe Creative Suite programs;
  • AP Style components.

Ability to:

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships;
  • Gather information and present it in a proper manner for public consumption;
  • Take direction and constructive criticism;
  • Clearly communicate at multiple organizational levels.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods;
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.

Part-time employees who have at least six (6) months continuous employment may be paid for all holidays except the Veterans Day floating holiday. Part-time employees are not eligible for the Veteran’s Day floating holiday because City offices are not closed on that day. The number of hours granted these employees as holiday pay is based on the average number of hours normally worked in a day.

The City designates the eleven (11) following dates as holidays to be observed with pay:

New Year’s Day – January 1

Martin Luther King Day – Third Monday in January

Good Friday – Friday before Easter

Memorial Day – Last Monday in May

Independence Day – July 4

Labor Day – First Monday of September

Veterans Day – November 11 (Floating Holiday)

Thanksgiving Day – Fourth Thursday in November

Friday after Thanksgiving (Fourth Friday in November)

Christmas Eve – December 24

Christmas Day – December 25
