Job Description

About

Our mission is to raise AGI with the richness of human intelligence — curious, witty, imaginative, and full of unexpected brilliance.

Surge was founded by engineers and researchers who dreamed of building the next generation AI. We're building a platform that powers the most powerful models in the world in partnership with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google.

At Surge, we believe the path to AGI isn't just about scaling compute—it's about embracing the unlimited ceiling of human intelligence and creativity in the data that shapes these systems. Our platform combines elite human expertise with cutting-edge tools for scalable oversight, from building rich RL environments to conducting rigorous evaluations that go beyond benchmarks. We've run a profitable business from day one without raising venture funding.

‍

The Role

As an elite law contributor, you’ll bring the analytical discipline and interpretive judgment of high-stakes legal reasoning to the datasets that train advanced models. You’ll evaluate and construct arguments with precision — interpreting precedent, balancing principles, and reasoning from first principles through competing frameworks.

The role requires intellectual rigor and a deep sense of fairness. You’ll help define what “good reasoning” looks like when outcomes hinge on logic, language, and moral interpretation.

What we’re Looking for

  • Legal Excellence – Current or former Supreme Court clerk, appellate advocate, or senior counsel at a top law firm, government office, or legal nonprofit (required)
  • Analytical Precision – Exceptional ability to parse argument structure, identify hidden assumptions, and reason from precedent
  • Writing Mastery – Experience crafting persuasive, technically sound arguments for courts or policy audiences
  • ‍Integrity & Judgment – Commitment to principled reasoning and intellectual honesty

Work You Might Do

  • Reviewing model arguments for logical consistency, interpretive accuracy, and clarity
  • Drafting exemplar legal analyses that reflect real appellate reasoning
  • Building datasets of structured argumentation to teach logical reasoning and counter-argument
  • Partnering with Surge researchers to formalize frameworks for legal analysis and ethical decision-making

How to Apply
