Rep. Eric Sorensen seeks a creative, detail-oriented, and experienced communications operative to join his Congressional office in Washington DC. 

Applicants will be working directly with a Member of Congress who has a background in broadcast communications and a keen eye for effective strategy and tactics. Strong candidates will prefer working in fast-paced collaborative working environments, possess strong political instincts, excellent writing and digital media skills. This communications operative will be a senior member of the team that reports directly to the Chief of Staff, and works collaboratively with a senior communication team member in the District. 

This is not an entry-level position. Ideal candidates will have three to four years of experience working in fast-paced communications environments. This position is based in Washington, D.C., with a possibility for travel to the District. Salary commensurate with experience.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop a comprehensive communication strategy by collaborating with the senior communications team member in the District to achieve the Member’s legislative and communications priorities. 
  • Work with the team to build, manage, and execute press events, including in-person and virtual press conferences, tele-townhalls, earned media events, and press interviews.
  • Draft remarks including talking points for the Congressman and team members, memo writing, press releases and advisories, and scripts for short and long form videos. 
  • Collaborate actively with the legislative and District teams to ensure cohesive messaging on constituent services, policy rollouts, and district events.
  • Establish and develop productive relationships with the national and Hill press corps to successfully pitch and field stories, including handling rapid response as needed. 
  • Manage franked communications budget coordinating with digital, print, and video vendors to maximize paid communications for the official office. 
  • Work in collaboration with senior communications team member in the District on digital content, including drafting, editing, graphics and videos for social media channels and Website. 

Qualifications Include:

  • Three to four years of political communications experience.
  • Experience with franked communications tools and familiarity with House franking rules
  • Demonstrated record of establishing and maintaining relationships with the press
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-visibility office
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to support Member’s objectives
