POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) seeks a strategic, adaptable, and innovative deputy communications director to join our growing team.
The deputy communications director is tasked with developing and supporting the growth and thinking of the M4BL communications team to build narrative power and advance the goals of the M4BL ecosystem. In addition to providing staff support, the deputy communications director collaborates with the communications director to ideate, develop, implement, and evaluate M4BL communications strategies across issue areas. In collaboration with the M4BL leadership team, strategy table, and staff, we will generate a strategic plan and a communications strategy to produce high-quality content and galvanize Black supporters as we forge new ways toward justice and liberation.
The deputy communications director will:
Use strategic communications to create visibility for M4BL and our programs
Develop and oversee strategy for M4BL programmatic work that aligns with our goals and objectives
Implement organizational and programmatic communication activities
Train and manage staff on communications-related activities and The ideal candidate has five to seven years of experience in developing and implementing communications strategies with an analysis of race and gender. They know how to engage authentically and creatively with constituents. They should be comfortable juggling multiple tasks and should thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Work with the communications director to support and develop M4BL’s growing communications team, including hiring, management, professional development, evaluation, work planning, etc.
Work with the communications and issue-organizing teams to develop, implement, and evaluate M4BL’s internal and external communications strategies, including but not limited to strategic communications, digital, web and tech, press and editorial, and design
Develop and edit values-aligned internal and external organizational content and materials, such as messaging guides, speeches, organizational statements, web copy, op-eds, communications briefs, etc.
Collaborate with communications director, consultant teams, and M4BL leadership and strategy tables on rapid-response strategies, preparedness, and crisis management
Collaborate with coalition members, movement comrades, and campaign partners to proliferate M4BL’s ideas, strategies, and assessments in movement-wide efforts
Collaborate on the development, implementation, and evaluation of M4BL’s efforts around trans liberation, ending patriarchal violence, and upholding disability justice; report monthly on M4BL’s successes and growth areas
Co-create agendas for team meetings and co-lead team meetings
Act as a spokesperson for M4BL when appropriate
Handle other projects related to building narrative power for M4BL, as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
5–7 years of experience developing, implementing, and evaluating communications strategies for advocacy, nonprofit, or base-building organizations
A commitment to Black liberation, trans liberation, disability justice, and ending patriarchal violence
1–3 years of experience supporting and developing communications staff
Strong analytical skills for developing messaging on issues and evaluating media strategies
Management and planning skills to pursue numerous concurrent projects
Flexibility to adjust to fast-developing issues and changing political circumstances, as well as a “hell yes” attitude toward challenges

LOCATION
This is a remote, exempt, full-time (40 hours per week) position
