The Deputy Press Secretary position is ideal for a creative media-relations expert who inspires collaboration, thinks like an organizer, improves tactics based on results, and is skillful at narrative strategy and storytelling from a relational approach. The ideal candidate has experience working with value-driven organizations, and a passion for dismantling white supremacist oppression, racism and colonialism in the fight for a more equitable planet.

The Deputy Press Secretary participates in the development, planning, and coordination of media work, demonstrating a deep understanding of the landscape of the racial justice and economic justice movements and how those movements intersect with environmentalism. They should have a solid grasp of Sierra Club’s work, a personal commitment to and knowledge of social justice, and a passion for advancing progressive social change.

The Deputy Press Secretary acts as a media strategist, identifying opportunities and working with campaign and coalition staff to implement communication strategies pertaining to the Energy campaign, specifically working on federal coal and clean energy issues. They will serve as a liaison between the Sierra Club and key media contacts, to develop relationships that advance the Sierra Club’s media coverage.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

• Seven years of combined education and work experience in communications
• Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to understanding how bias, racism, and other inequities show up in environmental advocacy and feels responsible for disrupting those patterns and inspiring others do the same.
• Ability to interact cooperatively and effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
• Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure.
• Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

Compensation and Benefits

• The salary range for this position is $65 ,500 - $85,000
• This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union or Sierra Employee Alliance, depending on location.
• The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.
• Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
• This is a category 4 exempt, represented position.
