Development and Communications Associate (Grant Writing Focus) - Full Time


Job Summary: The
Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and preserving sight through services, education, advocacy, and innovation. Our programs advance vision health equity across the D.C. Metropolitan region.


POB seeks a full time strong writer and storyteller to support our fundraising and communications efforts. This role focuses primarily on grant writing, donor communications, and persuasive content creation that connects funders and the public to our mission. The ideal candidate has experience crafting compelling narratives for nonprofit audiences and is eager to grow in both development and communications.


Job Location:
Capitol Hill, 5-minute walk from Union Station, Hybrid Remote (at least 3 days per week in office)

Work Schedule: Minimum 40 hours per week

Salary: $55,000 - $57,000


Responsibilities:

Development & Grant Writing

  • Write, edit, and submit compelling grant proposals and reports to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Draft donor appeals, stewardship letters, and impact stories.
  • Research and identify new funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with program staff and leadership to gather necessary information for proposals.
  • Maintain a master grants calendar to ensure timely submissions and compliance.
  • Organize and maintain accurate grant and donor records in a web-based database.
  • Assist with donor research, engagement, and stewardship activities.


Communications
  • Develop, write, and edit content for various channels, including emails, blog posts, press releases, newsletters, and social media.
  • Support digital campaigns and community outreach efforts.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all platforms.


General & Event Support:
  • Assist with donor acknowledgment processes, mailings, and database management.
  • Represent POB at community and special events.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including conferences and training sessions.


Other Duties:
  • Available occasional weekends and evenings
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • US Citizen
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in a relevant field
  • At least one year of grant writing, fundraising, donor communications, or persuasive writing experience in a nonprofit or equivalent professional setting
  • Valid driver’s license in the metro area (DC, MD, VA)
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Proven ability to craft clear, compelling written content for different audiences
  • Proven experience in grant writing and institutional donor research, with a track record of successful funding proposals
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines through effective planning and organization
  • Ability to collaborate within diverse, multi-disciplinary teams, demonstrating a proactive, adaptable, and solutions-oriented approach.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, focusing on prioritization and meeting deadlines
  • Quick learner with a problem-solving mindset, eager to contribute as a reliable and resourceful team player
  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive), Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Salesforce (or similar fundraising/CRM database), Canva, grant research tools (Foundation Directory, Instrumental, Grant Station), and WordPress
  • Maintain professional appearance and attitude
  • Bilingual, e.g., Spanish, is a plus
