Position Summary
Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) is seeking a Director of Creative Communications to lead a mission-driven, content-forward communications team. This isn’t just a Comms Director role—it’s a creative leadership position for someone who understands narrative, content, branding, and digital fluency as core tools of political power.
As the head of a four-person communications team, you’ll set strategy, maintain brand integrity, and oversee every aspect of the Member’s external presence—from social media to press hits to newsletters. You’ll be a key advisor to the Member and the senior staff, a builder of strong internal systems, and an all-in content leader who’s just as comfortable storyboarding a video as shaping a message frame for a national policy moment.
This role demands someone who can inspire and execute—someone who moves fast, builds trust, and gets results without waiting for permission.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the office’s communications strategy across digital, video, and press—owning the message, tone, and visual identity of the Member’s public presence.
- Supervise and mentor three others on the communications team: Press Secretary, Senior Video Producer & Editor, and Digital Content Associate.
- Serve as a senior advisor to the Member and Chief of Staff—offering guidance on media, messaging, and public positioning.
- Write and edit a range of content, including speeches, newsletters, franked mail, statements, talking points, and op-eds.
- Direct social and digital media efforts, ensuring alignment between message, visuals, and audience across platforms.
- Manage the content pipeline—overseeing calendars, approvals, production timelines, and analytics.
- Translate complex policy and district work into compelling content that reaches real people in real time.
- Identify creative opportunities for earned media, video, and digital storytelling.
- Collaborate closely with legislative, district, and scheduling staff to plan strategic rollouts and maximize impact.
- Lead the office’s visual and brand standards—from lighting and framing in videos to overall consistency in tone and design.
What You’ll Do:
- Own the narrative. Set the message, tone, and visual identity for Rep. Gomez’s public communications across digital, video, and traditional press.
- Lead the team. Supervise and inspire a creative comms squad: Press Secretary, Senior Video Producer & Editor, and Digital Content Associate.
- Build the brand. Develop and evolve the visual and messaging identity of the Member as a national leader and hometown champion.
- Be a key advisor. Provide strategic counsel to the Member and Chief of Staff—helping shape how legislative, political, and district work gets communicated.
- Spot the moment. Anticipate news cycles, jump on trends, and mine congressional work and district stories for sharable, viral, or meaningful content.
- Write like a beast. Draft speeches, statements, talking points, newsletters, op-eds, and more—with clarity, urgency, and authenticity.
- Direct cross-platform content. Drive strategy for social media, franked mail, newsletters, videos, and media placements that align with office priorities.
- Keep the trains running. Build and maintain systems for planning, approving, publishing, and analyzing content and communications.
- Think politically. Understand power, timing, and narrative. Your instincts should be grounded in how real people receive and respond to messages.
- Collaborate across the office. Work with legislative, district, and scheduling teams to align messaging with action, and drive unified rollouts.
Required Qualifications
- 5–7+ years of experience in political, campaign, or advocacy communications, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Proven record of managing creative or comms teams in high-pressure, high-profile environments.
- Exceptional writing skills, with ability to write across formats (press, speeches, digital, etc.).
- Strong creative instincts, with experience developing brand narratives and storytelling strategy.
- Deep understanding of social and digital content—what works, what doesn’t, and why.
- Ability to build structure in a fast-paced environment; strong project management and organizational skills.
- Political judgment and strategic mindset—you get both the optics and the impact.
- Collaborative leadership style, with the ability to inspire, mentor, and challenge a diverse team.
- Familiarity with digital tools including Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Google Workspace, and social management platforms.
- Commitment to equity, justice, and delivering results for working families.
