Job Description
The White House Historical Association seeks a Director of Digital Engagement to lead the organization's digital engagement strategy through creative storytelling, compelling content, and innovative audience engagement. The Director develops and executes integrated digital communications that connect external audiences with the Association's mission, educational resources, public programs, digital collections, publications, executive thought leadership, and institutional initiatives across social media, websites, email marketing, and other digital channels.
This position reports to the Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Engagement and works closely with members of the Marketing, Communications, and Engagement department, the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History, The People's House: A White House Experience, the President's Office, and other departments across the Association.
The Director of Digital Engagement owns the Association’s external social channels, audience engagement strategies, digital storytelling, and performance analytics, and collaborates across the organization to develop and execute integrated digital strategies that expand audience reach, strengthen public engagement, grow digital communities, and advance mission-driven storytelling. This position works closely with other members of the Marketing, Communications, and Engagement department to amplify partnerships, organizational initiatives, and institutional priorities through digital channels.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop and implement the Association's digital engagement strategy across social media, email marketing, websites, and other digital communication channels.
· Lead the creation and execution of digital content strategies that engage external audiences and promote the Association's mission, programs, educational resources, digital collections, publications, podcasts, and public initiatives.
· Develop and manage integrated digital campaigns that increase audience awareness, engagement, and participation across the Association's digital platforms.
· Oversee the Association's social media presence, including content planning, editorial calendars, audience engagement, platform growth, and community management.
· Collaborate with departments across the Association to identify stories, programs, events, and initiatives that can be translated into compelling digital content and audience engagement opportunities.
· Partner with the President's Office and senior leadership to support the digital promotion of executive communications, thought leadership, and institutional priorities.
· Create and oversee digital storytelling initiatives utilizing written content, video, photography, graphics, and emerging digital formats to engage audiences and advance the Association's mission.
· Manage relationships with digital agencies, creative vendors, technology partners, and contractors that support digital communications and audience engagement efforts.
· Establish performance metrics and analyze audience behavior, platform performance, and campaign effectiveness to measure engagement, growth, and organizational impact.
· Develop reports, dashboards, and strategic recommendations that communicate digital performance and audience insights to leadership, donors, and other key stakeholders.
· Monitor emerging trends, technologies, platforms, and best practices in digital communications and audience engagement and recommend innovative approaches that strengthen the Association's digital presence.
· Work closely with members of the Marketing, Communications, and Engagement department to support the digital promotion of strategic partnerships, institutional initiatives, and organizational priorities.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree required.
· Five to eight years of progressive experience in digital communications, social media strategy, digital marketing, content development, or audience engagement required. Experience in the nonprofit, museum, education, cultural, or public history sectors is preferred.
· Demonstrated success developing and executing multi-channel digital engagement strategies that drive audience growth and engagement.
· Strong content strategy, editorial planning, writing, and storytelling skills, with experience creating content for diverse digital audiences and platforms.
· Experience managing social media platforms, digital campaigns, audience engagement initiatives, and community-building efforts.
· Exceptional written, verbal, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate effectively across departments.
· Experience analyzing digital performance metrics and translating data into actionable recommendations and strategic insights.
· Experience managing digital agencies, external vendors, freelancers, and technology partners.
· Proficiency with Google Analytics, social media management platforms, content management systems, email marketing platforms, CRM systems, and digital content creation tools.
· Familiarity with video production, digital content development, graphic design, and emerging digital storytelling formats preferred.
· A background or interest in American history, museums, education, the presidency, the White House, or cultural institutions is a plus.
