Georgetown University's Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) was founded in 2016 to respond to the dual crisis of incarceration and recidivism. PJI brings together leading scholars, practitioners, students and those affected by the criminal justice system to tackle the problem of mass incarceration one of the most crucial moral and political issues of our time.
The Director of Reentry Services is responsible for the development and implementation of PJI's comprehensive reentry support strategy, ranging from direct support of PJI program alumni in their reintegration post-incarceration to advocacy work on behalf of returning citizens in local and national forums. They are essential to the sustained success of our educational and job training programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, while also serving as the public face of the initiative in our ongoing efforts to reduce the stigma of incarceration and increase opportunities (for employment, civic engagement, etc.) for formerly incarcerated people.
Reporting directly to the PJI Director, the Director of Reentry Services also serves as the main point of contact between PJI and other reentry service providers in the area and works closely with local governmental organizations and coalitions interested in contributing to policy reforms that impact returning citizens. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Case Management
Meet with each individual on a regular basis and maintain an ongoing understanding of their circumstances (housing, employment, contact information, etc.) and need for additional support.
Meet - when applicable - currently incarcerated PJI affiliates and begin preliminary preparation for their reentry - including recommendations for and referrals to educational and vocational programs, treatments, groups, and other positive opportunities.
Collaborate with each individual to develop a personalized reentry plan, including appropriate goal setting measures and identifies areas of need.
Complete regular assessments of needs and coordinate referrals to community-based organizations that will provide specific reentry services.
Provide support and counseling throughout the probation/parole process and establish relationships with community supervision officers.
Provide occasional transportation services to PJI program alumni as they obtain identification and other personal documents; meet with probation/parole officers; and attend job interviews, court hearings, support groups, or any other obligation related to their reentry.
Administration and Strategic Leadership
Maintain current and well-organized records on each student in program databases.
Create and regularly update a list of DC reentry services and resources.
Attend weekly PJI and Pivot team meetings.
Cultivate and manage our growing alumni network, and oversee planning and execution of events geared towards PJI's returning citizens.
Monitor PJI's Corrlinks and other accounts used for communication with currently incarcerated individuals.
Assume primary responsibility for PJI's development, implementation, and enhancement of reentry services and initiatives.
Community Engagement and Advancement
Cultivate and preserve community partnerships with other service providers.
Attend community events and informational sessions targeting the reentry community.
Establish relationships and contacts with the Mayor's Office on Returning Citizens' Affairs, DC DOC, The READY Center, and other local reentry organizations.
Engage with local and national groups and coalitions centered on reentry efforts.
Collaborate with PJI leadership team to develop a communications strategy and consistent messaging on issues related to reentry and reintegration.
Identify external funding opportunities and collaborate with team members to complete the application process.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree preferred
Professional experience in the field of reentry - preferably with emphasis on program development and strategic vision
Familiarity with local reentry processes, services, and resources, as well as community and partner organizations, support groups, etc.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Goal-oriented, with the demonstrated ability to think and act strategically for the short and long term.
Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
Demonstrated success in establishing trust and building and maintaining relationships
High degree of personal integrity and ethics by respecting the confidential and sensitive nature of each individual's reentry efforts.
Digital literacy including mastery of computer skills - MS Office Word and Excel - as well as technical aptitude (navigating online resources and applying technology)
Collaborative partner, with the ability to work independently and with others
Ability to meet and manage deadlines
Preferred qualifications
Personal experience with the reentry process and familiarity with the challenges and barriers faced by currently and formerly incarcerated individuals
Experience with local legislative processes and affairs
Demonstrated effectiveness as a public speaker and in an advocacy role
The position of Director of Reentry Services is a term position.
