Position Summary:

As the Assistant Director, State Government Relations for UCLA’s Government and Community Relations (GCR) team, you will work with us to engage, inform and increase support among state legislators and other stakeholders as you develop and implement programs, events, and briefings that reflect the university’s state relations priorities. As a vital member of our team, you will help manage issues, resolve problems and answer questions referred by state officials, university administrators and/or other UCLA constituents. We encourage you to bring your passion for advocacy and outreach to help expand our active network of individuals and professionals and represent UCLA at meetings, forums and events to generate greater presence among state elected leaders and other state government officials. As our Assistant Director, you will collaboratively identify issues that are important to UCLA, conduct research, develop materials and implement active campaigns in support of UC initiatives. Your strong understanding of state government and politics will be beneficial to provide analysis and evaluation of issues at hand and to offer recommendations toward resolution. We are committed in our efforts to cultivate meaningful relationships with elected officials and with community members to advance our priorities and deepen UCLA’s connection to those we serve. As part of the UCLA GCR team, you will inform and provide leadership and guidance to other GCR colleagues on state government matters, supporting broader GCR efforts when needed. Salary & Compensation: *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.   • Minimum of three years of relevant experience including knowledge and understanding of public policy, legislative, governmental and political institutions and organizations at the state level. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, planning, and implementing special projects related to state relations efforts and initiatives. (Required)
  • Knowledge of campus resources and procedures required to facilitate responses to legislator requests, programming opportunities and state relations responsibilities. (Required)
  • Ability to recruit, train, organize, motivate and evaluate the efforts of volunteers. (Required)
  • Strong research and critical thinking skills; confident in making decisions; adept at managing many perspectives, solving problems and working toward successful outcomes. (Required)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external constituents of diverse backgrounds. (Required)
  • Impeccable integrity, discretion and high ethical standards. (Required)
  • Strong sense of political acumen to effectively represent the campus. (Required)
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills for use in advocacy programs, state relations, issues management and managerial support. (Required)
  • Detail oriented with strong time/project management skills; ability to take initiative, establish priorities, manage multiple tasks and multi-phase projects simultaneously from inception to completion and complete work within deadlines under minimal supervision. (Required)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to produce proposals, reports, talking points, correspondence and other materials; strong ability to make presentations to individuals or groups and communicate/convey information with diverse publics. (Required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of applications; ability to learn new technologies in a prompt and efficient manner. (Required)
  • Knowledge and understanding of California state government, both the legislative and executive branches including the processes for action by each branch and organization of the legislature and agencies. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the campus, its mission, goals, objectives, programs, achievements and issues of concerns as well as the broader California higher education system. (Preferred)

  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
