Macfadden, an Amentum company, is seeking a Graphic Designer and Creative Coordinator to provide support to USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) in the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA), as well as to serve as a creative and graphic liaison across DCHA’s humanitarian portfolios. 

USAID/OFDA provides humanitarian assistance for the U.S. Government (USG) in response to natural disasters and complex emergencies.  The Graphic Designer and Creative Coordinator is a key member of USAID/OFDA’s Information Support Unit (ISU) and reports to the ISU manager.

 The Graphic Designer and Creative Coordinator works very closely with other ISU members, USAID/OFDA’s Strategic Communications Team, and other divisions within USAID/OFDA to produce infographics and charts that visually represent USAID/OFDA’s role in international humanitarian assistance and in specific disaster responses for both internal USG and public audiences.

 The Graphic Designer and Creative Coordinator will also mentor other graphic design and creative staff on the Humanitarian Assistance Support Contract as design support services expand.  The Graphic Designer and Creative Coordinator produces products in both print and web media.

A US secret security clearance or above is required to qualify for this position

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related discipline is required.  The Graphic Designer must be motivated to keep up with new or evolving computer graphics and design trends independently.

Experience:

  • Three years of progressively responsible work experience in a graphic design role.  Must demonstrate professional graphic design experience with strong graphic design portfolio, incorporating infographics and data visualization; experience with creating interactive charts and infographics also very key.  Proven experience with developing the layout for sizable reports, as well as familiarity with tagging documents for 508 compliance. 
  • Familiarity with humanitarian and disaster relief issues, USG agencies, and strategic messaging is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with collaborative projects, including receiving and delivering edits on visual products.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated fluency in Adobe Creative Suite—particularly After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign—as well as the Microsoft Office suite
  • Advanced skills in illustration
  • Advanced skills in layout design
  • Ability to work and design on Apple iMac, and familiarity working on Windows/PCs
  • Highly creative and innovative artistic talent

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. In coordination with the ISU and/or the Strategic Communications Team, conceptualize and develop infographics and other visual representations that effectively communicate USAID/OFDA’s work to public and internal USG audiences. 

2. Conceptualize and develop design solutions and templates for a wide variety of projects, including internal and external information products, multimedia and print media materials, the USAID/OFDA annual report, conference and event materials, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, exhibit/signage materials, online products, and USAID/OFDA-related content on the USAID website. 

3. Work with web developers, Strategic Communications staff, and other stakeholders on designing humanitarian web-based content, specifically front-end web-based visualization.

4. Act as design consultant to staff by collaboratively developing clear visual representations and infographics that communicate humanitarian programs or concepts, as well as current USAID priorities and strategies.

5. Coordinate and guide USAID/OFDA’s graphic design portfolio, including supporting the training of junior team members, facilitating tasking organization, and liaising with USAID/OFDA staff on graphic design assignments.

6. Coordinate, guide, and/or liaise with other graphic design and creative staff on externally focused DCHA humanitarian infographics and other visual representations that require collaborative office production.

7. Other duties as assigned, including providing basic training on graphic design software to members of the ISU.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
