Internship Overview
The Office of the Chief Disability Officer (OCDO) within the New York State Executive Chamber is seeking a highly creative, motivated Intern with a background or strong interest in health equity, disability rights, advocacy, justice, and equality.
This is a hands-on internship, not a passive observer role. The intern will help bring disability lived experience and public initiatives to life through visual storytelling, branded materials, illustrations, and event assets. The role also includes supporting the planning and execution of large, high-visibility public events tied to disability inclusion and state priorities. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys turning complex ideas into actionable recommendations and reports and who is excited to see their work used publicly.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide substantive and meaningful technical, planning, and subject matter support to multiple Office of the Chief Disability Officer (OCDO) projects focused on health equity for New Yorkers with disabilities.
- Serve as a key member of the team responsible for coordinating a statewide health equity project initiated through the Governor’s 2026 State of the State process.
- Engage with members of New York’s disability community as well as caregivers and family members on health equity efforts and initiatives - including assisting in coordinating meetings, communicating via email and phone, and through virtual and in-person interactions.
- Collaborate with New York State government and non-governmental stakeholders on health equity efforts and initiatives.
- Conduct research as well as provide high-level summary analysis of journal articles, studies, and policy documents shared by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Characteristics
- Demonstrated experience with - and commitment to - disability rights, advocacy, justice and equality.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced government setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Google applications.
Requirements
- Residency: must be either a New York State resident or currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university in New York State.
- Education: must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university, and must have at least Sophomore standing if enrolled in an undergraduate institution.
