Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is looking for a self-motivated experienced Legislative Assistant or Policy Advisor to join her Washington, DC office. Primary responsibilities include serving as a liaison with federal, state, local agencies and stakeholder groups, tracking and analyzing public policy and Congressional legislation in their assigned issue area, , and developing and executing legislation in their assigned portions of the Congresswoman’s legislative plan, including supporting her role as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. This role will cover several issues but focus on healthcare and public health.

Some key functions of the position include:

  • Collaborates with the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff to formulate and advance through senior level negotiations and creative thinking legislative initiatives for assigned issue areas.
  • Drafts legislation and coordinates with communications and district teams for roll out of bill introductions.
  • Advance the Congresswoman’s health policy priorities via the Appropriations process. Considers and addresses differing perspectives and opinions to navigate conflicts and develop solutions effectively.
  • Tracks legislation and other developments, including Executive Branch policies, in assigned issue areas to brief the Member for floor work, committee work, work in the district, and outside House-related activities.
  • Provides information to generate ideas and make decisions pertaining to press, mass mailings, and newsletters.
  • Provides district office staff with targeted information to assist preparation for community events and meetings.
  • Collaborates with the Communications Team to draft speeches, press releases, op-eds, and Congressional Record statements for the Member.
  • Edits and approves constituent letters in assigned issue areas and assists constituents with federal matters.
  • Acts as a liaison with committee and Federal departments and agencies to communicate and coordinate information regarding specific legislative matters.
  • Prepares written policy memos and briefing materials for Member in advance of committee hearings, markups, and meetings.
  • Attends hearings, markups, and meetings, with the Member and other senior staff.
  • Serves as the Member's representative at meetings with constituents and other interest groups (e.g., community organizers, private sector executives, government officials).

The successful applicant must be a team player and have a positive attitude and the genuine desire to serve the constituents of Florida’s 25th Congressional District. Applicants must possess strong verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills. They must have the ability to quickly execute multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of healthcare and public health policy is required. A law degree is preferred. Additional language proficiency, including in Spanish, is a plus. This is not an entry level job.

Salary Range: title and compensation commiserate with experience
