Job Description
DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) is rooted in the conviction that income should never be a barrier to justice. Founded in 2015 to help close access to justice gaps in the District of Columbia, DCALF serves an expansive range of hardworking DC residents unable to afford market-based legal services, including modest-income residents whose household incomes put them just beyond the limits of traditional legal aid and low-income residents navigating unmet legal needs. Through innovative programming and a commitment to equity, DCALF delivers no cost and low-cost legal services in family law, probate, estate planning, and immigration, bridging the gaps in DC’s civil justice system and delivering transformative legal services that empower DC residents to thrive.
DCALF seeks a temporary part-time contract attorney to provide supervisory support for DCALF’s immigration practice. This support will primarily consist of supervising DCALF’s 2025-2026 cohort of fellows during initial client consultations; reviewing and providing feedback on court filings and declarations; and providing guidance, feedback, and support to the immigration team on their case strategy. The contract is expected to start on January 5th and end March 31st. The work will be performed remotely and require approximately 10-15 hours per week.
Duties to include:
- Consultations
- Participate by phone and/or video in all initial client consultations conducted by DCALF’s 2025-2026 fellows, providing advice directly to the client when needed to supplement the fellows’ work.
- Debrief consultations with fellows and provide strategic guidance on next steps for the client and for DCALF.
- Review of Work Product:
- Review and provide feedback on staff attorneys’ and fellows’ work product, applications for relief, evidentiary packets, and consultation preparations.
- Strategic Case Support:
- Conduct weekly 30-minute check-ins with each member of the five-person immigration team and meet with the Deputy Legal Director, as needed.
- Hold 90-minute open office hours two times per week, during which immigration team members may reach out with any substantive and procedural questions.
Qualifications (strongly preferred)
- 5+ years of immigration practice experience, including expertise with SIJS, Asylum, U visas, T visas, VAWA, Family based petitions and AOS, Naturalizations, among other humanitarian forms of relief.
- Familiarity working with EOIR, DHS, and DCALF’s Washington, DC-based client base.
- Experience and/or demonstrated desire to supervise and mentor new attorneys.
- Willingness and flexibility to perform the scope of work during or outside of standard business hours, as needed.
