Junior Legal Advisor at Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations


The Junior Legal Advisor will join an existing legal team in the Permanent Mission of the UAE (New York).

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Legal Affairs at the Permanent Mission, the Junior Legal Advisor will be advising diplomats, researchers, communications professionals and others at the Permanent Mission, on the legal implications of the work they are pursuing. The responsibilities of the Junior Legal Advisor may include:

•Analyzing draft UN resolutions and supporting ongoing negotiations of texts;

•Researching and preparing legal advice on products adopted and reports issued by the UN;

•Advising and preparing legal analysis on the Security Council and the General Assembly working methods, procedure and precedents, based on in-depth research;

•Advising and reporting on UN sanctions regimes and procedure;

•Editing and reviewing public statements to ensure consistency with international law;

•Researching and preparing legal opinions on aspects of international law;

•Preparing reports and notes for transmission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the legal aspects of activities of the Mission.


In addition, the Junior Legal Advisor will undertake research, prepare legal notes, and support the preparation of legal notes on questions related to international law for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and other stakeholders in Capital. For those tasks (up to 30%), the Junior Legal Advisor will report directly to a legal advisor in MOFA.


Essential Skills

•Excellent legal analytical and writing skills and an ability to research and prepare concise and accurate analytical reports that are useful for decision makers who do not have a legal background;

•Ability to work under pressure and against short deadlines;

•Good judgment and organizational skills to prioritize and manage work on multiple projects to tight deadlines;

•Good presentation and briefing skills that can be adjusted to the requirements of different audiences;

•Ability to use software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.

•Fluency in written and spoken English, knowledge of Arabic a plus.

Experience and Qualifications

•An advanced degree in international law.

•Between 3 to 10 years of professional experience in international law, United Nations experience a plus.
