Congresswoman Emily Randall is seeking an outgoing, organized, and highly motivated Legislative Correspondent & Staff Assistant in her DC office. Responsibilities include logging phone calls, greeting visitors, managing front office operations, handling tour and flag requests, drafting constituent correspondence and managing the mail program, overseeing the intern program, providing administrative support to the team, and additional duties as assigned.

Job Expectations:

The Legislative Correspondent & Staff Assistant will be expected to manage the front desk during office hours, handle Capitol and White House tour requests, fulfill flag requests, support the district office with administrative office needs, and assist the D.C. office staff with work as assigned. They will also manage the constituent mail program, which includes researching legislative issues and drafting correspondence to explain the Member’s position on a variety of public policy matters. 

Job Duties:

  • Greets constituents, visitors, and other VIPs to provide a welcoming environment and positive first impression of the office
  • Handles incoming calls and captures constituent requests to ensure consideration by Member office
  • Maintains literature regarding the district and House offices to distribute to visitors
  • Monitors and organizes requests for assistance to ensure that they are directed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner
  • Signs for deliveries and forwards all materials delivered to ensure timely and appropriate handling
  • Performs general administrative assignments as assigned to assist the office staff with work
  • Researches legislative issues and drafts correspondence to explain the Member's position on public policy matters
  • Consults with the Legislative Director and Legislative Assistants to ensure the Member's library of legislative letters are accurate, up to date, and reflective of the Member's policy positions
  • Creates and maintains a collection of prepared responses to address general legislative inquiries
  • Drafts and edits tailored letters to answer constituent inquiries that require special research or nuanced responses
  • Ensures that legislative responses are completed promptly to maintain outstanding constituent relations

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated capacity for strong attention to detail, ensuring all work is thorough, accurate, and completed with care
  • Proven experience anticipating and meeting the needs of constituents and stakeholders, delivering high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced environment
  • An understanding of the legislative processes, government structures, and regulatory frameworks, and the ability to apply that knowledge effectively
  • Skilled in research, synthesis, and analysis to inform constituent correspondence program 
  • Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and persuasive materials for diverse audiences
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation abilities, including listening actively and tailoring messages to different contexts and stakeholders
  • Flexible and adaptable in responding to changing priorities, shifting circumstances, and evolving team or Member needs

Bonuses:

  • Previous constituent service or customer relationship management experience 
  • Ties to Washington state / Experience in Washington state politics (an eagerness to proactively learn the district is required!)
  • Previous Hill experience/internship
