ABOUT SAN DIEGO PRIDE: San Diego Pride (“Pride”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to foster pride, equality, and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities locally, nationally, and globally. San Diego Pride is a year-round LGBTQIA+ education and advocacy organization and one of the oldest LGBTQIA+ serving nonprofits in San Diego, best known for our annual flagship celebrations - the Pride Parade and Festival - that brings together more than 350,000 individuals from San Diego and across the globe. San Diego Pride is also the most philanthropic Pride organization in the world, having distributed over $3 million to LGBTQIA+ serving nonprofits since 1996.
ABOUT THE POSITION: Under the direction and guidance of the Director of Event Production, the
Manager of Volunteer Engagement will lead Pride’s volunteer strategy and volunteer logistics for 3,000+ volunteers serving Pride’s year‐round programs and signature events. This position will build and manage volunteer systems of operation and mentor 80+ volunteer leaders. The Manager will
collaborate across teams to integrate volunteer needs into organizational planning and supervise interns within the Event Production department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team & Volunteer Management
● Manage and mentor interns placed at Pride from high school through transition-aged youth age
groups assigned to the Event Production department.
● Manage and mentor volunteer leadership, program volunteers, and interns to ensure event
timeline adherence, program quality, and succession planning.
● Develop and maintain volunteer recruitment initiatives, onboarding processes, training, shift
scheduling, and recognition opportunities; manage volunteer databases and scheduling tools.
● Manage coaching, training, and resources provided to volunteer leaders to strengthen program
structure and program continuity.
● Coordinate volunteer communications and documentation to ensure clarity, consistency, and
institutional knowledge retention.
Strategy & Program Development
● Partner with the Event Production and Advocacy & Programs departments to plan, update, and
execute volunteer programs aligned with Pride’s strategic plan.
● Design and implement standard operating procedures for volunteer workflows, volunteer
communication protocols, and event logistics.
● Use metrics and best practices to evaluate volunteer program impact and implement
improvements for sustainability and growth.
● Partner with the Philanthropy and Finance & Operations departments to support the fulfillment
of sponsorship, grant funding, and partnership deliverables.
Event & Meeting Management
● Manage volunteer logistics coordination for large‐scale and signature events (Parade, Festival,
Pride Week, Latine Pride, QTAPI Week, Youth Leadership Academy).
● Manage vendor and contractor relationships related to volunteer operations; coordinate
equipment rentals and on‐site volunteer coverage.
● Plan and execute volunteer appreciation events throughout the year including the annual
Summer Pride Week Volunteer Appreciation Party attended by 400+ volunteers.
● Plan and execute monthly Pride Week volunteer training sessions for 50+ leaders
● Manage day‐of volunteer operations for events including shift coverage, check‐in systems,
communications, and contingency planning.
Program Support & Organizational Collaboration
● Support Pride 365 program volunteer leadership in planning and executing
● Work cross‐functionally with the Advocacy & Programs, Event Production, Philanthropy, and
Finance & Operations departments to integrate volunteer opportunities into broader event and
program plans.
● Manage relationships with community organizations to strengthen collaborative programming
and resource sharing.
● Represent San Diego Pride at community meetings, coalition gatherings, and stakeholder
engagements as needed.
● Support other programmatic and operational needs as assigned by the Director of Event
Production.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE:
● Education – A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required. Any combination of experience,
education, and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying.
● Experience – 3+ years of progressively-responsible experience working or volunteering in the
LGBTQIA+ community is preferred. Can substitute a combination of education and experience.
● Preferred Field of Expertise – LGBTQIA+ Issues and Programming, Volunteer Management and/or
Recruiting, Event Management
● Event Production & Project Management: Demonstrated ability to manage large‐scale events,
vendor relationships, and volunteer operations; strong organizational and time‐management
skills.
● Diversity and Inclusivity – Experience working with diverse communities. Demonstrated
understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues, equity, equality, inclusivity, and intersectionality.
● Communication – Strong verbal and written communications skills necessary to present data
effectively. Able to speak persuasively and write clearly and concisely.
● Volunteer Coordination – Ability to provide direction, support, and coaching to Pride volunteers
with a variety of lived experiences.
● Planning & Organizing – Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage
multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and
goals, and work independently in day-to-day functional needs.
● Problem Solving - Ability to anticipate and identify problems and use sound judgment and fact-
based analysis to develop effective and efficient solutions. Demonstrated application of judgment based on experience and knowledge.
● Software Skills – Including use of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-based applications;
familiarity with Asana, Canva, Eventeny or similar tools a plus.
● Reliable Transportation – this position will require occasional travel within the San Diego region
for program and outreach events.
