Each year, BCAN provides thousands of patients, caregivers and the medical community with the educational resources and support services they need to navigate their bladder cancer journeys. BCAN works collaboratively with medical and research professionals who are dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. 

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic National Walk Director to support and grow our national walks and revenue growth plans to invest in our patient education and bladder cancer research initiatives.

Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network – National Walk Director

The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Inc. is seeking a full-time National Walk Director to lead BCAN’s Walk to End Bladder Cancer. Over the last decade, BCAN’s Walk to End Bladder Cancer has grown to over 20 cities around the United States and engages volunteers, walkers, clinical leaders, and advocates to raise awareness and build community around those facing bladder cancer.

BCAN Walk Peer-to-Peer fundraising events play a vital role in increasing awareness about bladder cancer, providing essential support to thousands of individuals living with the disease, and generating crucial funds for bladder cancer education programs and research initiatives.

These nationwide events have included thousands of walkers in 47 states and, as a result of strong collaboration between volunteers and staff, have raised more than $6 million to fund BCAN’s vital educational and support programs and services.

Position Summary

This position has the opportunity to be a largely remote role with dedicated time spent at BCAN’s office in Bethesda, Maryland and will report to BCAN’s Vice President of Development. The Walk to End Bladder Cancer National Walk Director will provide essential leadership and strategic direction to this campaign and ensure consistent and exceptional day-of-event execution in all markets in conjunction with BCAN volunteers, while elevating and expanding the role of BCAN’s Walks in the greater comprehensive fundraising strategy. This role will direct the vision and day-to-day operations of a growing $1.75 -million-dollar event program that takes place in more than 20 major markets between the end of April and May. The Walk to End Bladder Cancer National Director will manage campaign activities, timelines, logistics, event budgets, and fundraising activities as well as coordinate with BCAN’s leadership and development team to ensure accountable execution of all events, cultivate and secure corporate sponsorships, and work with volunteer committees to ensure goals are met and best practices are followed.

Job Responsibilities

BCAN Walk to End Bladder Cancer Management

•        Logistical lead for all BCAN Walks nationwide.

•        Manage Walk income and expenses to track progress and achieve revenue goals for scheduled Walk fundraising events. 

•        Review and analyze data to set goals, refine approach, and maximize participation.

•        Develop a multi-year plan to prioritize and cultivate top walkers, teams, and sponsors.

•        Manage BCAN Walk leadership committees and serve as the point of contact for all local market coordinators/committees.

•        Oversee administration of the BCAN Walk program including accounting, finance, budget and database operations.

•        Develop and manage materials and oversee local Walk leaders and Walk expectations.

•        Support Walk site leaders in hosting support events, including kick-off events, post events, third party fundraising events, etc.

•        Develop and analyze post-event surveys to ensure best practices

BCAN Walk Strategic Development

•        Partner with the VP of Development to integrate a Walk growth and fundraising strategy with a comprehensive fundraising strategy for BCAN.

•        Develop and implement a three-year strategic plan to show significant revenue growth in BCAN’s Walk to End Bladder Cancer. Research, monitor and analyze other events in the Peer-to-Peer Walk/Run category to understand best practices that we can replicate or grow on a national scale.

•        Develop and implement annual operational plan that includes detailed budget, team development, corporate development, volunteer development and logistic plans.

•        Recommend volunteer and staff structure that supports the Walk strategic plan.

•        Hire, train and manage staff who support Walk initiatives. Serve as a mentor for other development colleagues and support their roles within Walk.

•        Identify new target markets for expansion and create pilot plans to test new BCAN Walk models. Collaborate closely with BCAN leadership to access and grow local relationships in pilot markets that significantly enhance the BCAN Walk experience, awareness and revenue potential.

BCAN Walk Fundraising

•        Manage Walk sponsors on national and local levels ensuring benefit delivery and coordination.

•        Support staff in cultivating top-level family and company fundraising walk teams.

•        Identify new sources of revenue including sponsorship and cause-related marketing opportunities stemming from team captains' professional affiliations and connections.

•        Support staff and local volunteers to develop and sell local sponsorships.

•        Collaborate with BCAN’s Vice President of Development and other leadership at BCAN to develop and implement a national and local sponsorship program.

•        Develop and manage annual incentive programs.

•        Coordinate and serve as a liaison to physicians and medical professionals to help promote the Walks to End Bladder Cancer.

•        Coordinate with BCAN’s Vice President of Development, Fundraising Manager, and other BCAN staff and consultants to ensure sponsorship deliverables and volunteer coordination.

BCAN Walk Marketing and Communications

•        Partner with BCAN’s Vice President of Communication and Marketing to manage an annual BCAN Walk marketing plan.

•        Identify target audiences and build appropriate marketing strategies to recruit, acknowledge and retain event participants and sponsors.

•        Develop a marketing and promotional plan to enhance the visibility and increase community awareness and participation in the BCAN Walk.

•        Partner with BCAN’s Marketing and Communications team and professional consultants to support media and awareness of BCAN’s Walk.

Minimum Qualifications

•        Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.

•        Minimum of five years of experience in a Peer-to-Peer Walk campaign with a proven track record of growth, preferably with a major non-profit. National level experience preferred.

•        Minimum of seven years of experience in event management and fundraising.

•        Fluency in web-based fundraising platforms is required. Convio Team Raiser/Raiser’s Edge and Luminate Online preferred.

•        Significant skills in planning, budgeting, and volunteer development.

•        Outgoing, energetic, with strong written, verbal and problem-solving skills.

•        Diplomatic and able to work well under pressure.

•        Capable of building and sustaining relationships with a variety of individuals and organizations. Navigates volunteers and situations with grace and decorum.

•        Organized, detail-oriented, responsive to deadlines, and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

•        Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed.

•        Travel is required during Walk season and other times throughout the year (approximately 15%).

Schedule: This position is full-time at 40 hours/week.

Location: There is opportunity for the successful candidate to work quasi-remotely, with time spent at BCAN’s National office in Bethesda, MD as determined necessary.

Compensation: Salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000.  BCAN offers an excellent benefits package including paid time off, retirement plan contributions, medical, dental, vision insurance and competitive salary commensurate with experience.
