The HistoryMakers, a 501c3 national African American educational/archival institution (http://www.thehistorymakers.org) headquartered in Chicago, seeks to hire its first Chief Operating Officer. This is a tremendous opportunity to have a significant impact on future generations by preserving and promoting the voices of Black Americans and honoring their contributions to our nation’s history.  This newly created position will report to the Founder & President and be responsible for the overall operations of The HistoryMakers while also serving as a member of the executive team. Operations includes human resources, facilities management, IT/database management, video production, systems development, analysis, and improvement. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of building efficient, cost-effective operating systems and delivering excellent service. The goal is to transition The HistoryMakers from a project-focused archival organization into a technologically advanced multimedia resource valued by generations of Americans.  

Responsibilities

·      Human Resources – Working with the President and Chief of Staff, oversee Human Resources and Talent including staff recruiting, onboarding, and training, payroll, benefits administration, performance reviews and surveys.

·      Operations - Monitor, manage and improve the efficiency of the organization’s facilities, IT and database management, business operations and inventory control systems.

·      Continuous Improvement - Liaise with the President and Chief of Staff to assist in the development of plans to evaluate and improve operations and anticipate technological changes and changes in end user behavior.  

·      Experience

·      5 -7 years of successful operating experience managing a non-profit or private sector organization or having built a business as a social entrepreneur.    

·      Proven track record in effectively managing human resources, talent, technology and facility operations.

·      Significant experience with data analytics, data science and working with FileMaker databases.

·      Skilled negotiator with a record of effective procurement of good and services and operating within budget.

·      Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

·      Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style.

·      Passion for and commitment to The HistoryMakers’ mission.

·      Bachelor’s degree required.

Its digital archive(https://da.thehistorymakers.org...passcode THM2023) has been licensed by colleges, universities, K-12 schools and public libraries for use by faculty, students and patrons and is growing in popularity in the wake of COVID19 and the focus on online learning. Within the next few years, The HistoryMakers will become the digital repository for the Black experience: providing much needed content, role models, success pathways and frameworks for generations of Americans.
