About Daughters Beyond Incarceration (DBI)

Daughters Beyond Incarceration (DBI) is a New Orleans–based nonprofit dedicated to ending mass incarceration by centering the voices of girls with incarcerated parents. We work to break cycles of generational incarceration through policy advocacy, youth leadership development, and family reunification programs. DBI is led by and for directly impacted communities, advancing bold systems change in Louisiana and beyond.

Role Summary

The Policy Associate leads DBI’s legislative advocacy and supports systems change efforts through the Policy Fellowship and Family Reunification Programs. This role facilitates fellowship curriculum, advances DBI’s policy priorities through coalition work and legislative tracking and strengthens data/documentation practices. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong writing, advocacy, and project management skills who is deeply committed to racial equity and justice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Policy Fellowship Program – Co-Lead DBI’s youth policy Fellowship, educate youth on DBI’s policy curriculum, mentor fellows, and track program outcomes.
  • Legislative Advocacy & Coalition Work – Lead DBI’s policy agenda, track bills, draft briefs, represent DBI in coalitions, and prepare legislative reports.
  • Data & Documentation – Centralize and manage program data, standardize templates, and ensure grant reporting accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, public policy, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in policy, legislative affairs, legal aid, or advocacy.
  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills with proven ability to draft memos, briefs, or reports.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with the ability to produce polished documents and manage data effectively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, social justice, and system-change.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience with collaborative tools (Google Suite, Microsoft 365, Zoom, Slack, etc.).
  • Willingness to travel frequently during legislative sessions; valid driver’s license and ability to pass background check required.
  • Willingness to work in person October through July and on some weekends.
