The HAI Policy and Society team plays a leading role not only in producing critical scholarship on AI governance and appropriate uses, but by also serving as a convener of national and global AI discussions. POSITION SUMMARY:
We are hiring one (1) full time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed term Policy Research Manager for two (2) years. Although not guaranteed, there will be potential for an extension/renewal following the initial 2 years contingent upon additional funding commitments and/or programmatic needs. This position will be based on Stanford’s main campus and will be considered for an option of hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need. Reporting to the Senior Manager for Policy Initiatives, the Policy Research Manager will develop publications and research programs to bring HAI policy research and recommendations to the attention of global policymakers. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated interest in AI and public policy, as well as exceptional written and oral communication abilities, and analytical skills.
CORE DUTIES:
- Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
- Support strategic planning of the policy and society research projects, including identifying research priorities, key stakeholders and policymakers, and potential partners.
- Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
- Perform ongoing literature reviews, collect and analyze relevant material from legislations, conferences and seminars, government documents, academic journals and policy publications, institutional databases and reports from a wide variety of sources, including government agencies, NGOs, etc.
- Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities under the general direction of PI. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).
- Write policy research publications, respond to federal requests for information, and formulate analyses on AI policy and governance issues.
- Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.
- Work with a multidisciplinary group of faculty, researchers, and industry experts across Stanford and beyond to facilitate research and programs, including policy briefs, white papers, expert workshops, collaborative research projects, etc.
- May oversee and train student workers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
- Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
- Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pound,
- Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.

The expected pay range for this position is $69,000 to $100,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
