The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus is seeking a press secretary to join its communications team in Indianapolis. This is a fast-paced role for a strong writer, sharp strategist and nimble communicator who can manage media relations, craft clear public messaging and help communicate Democratic senators’ work to Hoosiers across the state.
Role Description
This full-time, on-site Press Secretary role is based in Greater Indianapolis. Working under the communications director and chief of staff, the press secretary will support caucus members through press outreach, rapid response, speechwriting, digital communications and event support. This role is ideal for someone who thrives under pressure, has strong political instincts and can turn complex policy into clear, compelling messaging.
Responsibilities include:
- Responding to media inquiries and coordinating interviews
- Drafting press releases, statements, talking points, media advisories, newsletters and other written materials
- Organizing press conferences and media events
- Managing social media content across multiple platforms
- Monitoring breaking news and legislative developments for rapid-response opportunities
- Collaborating with policy, fiscal and legal staff to develop accurate, effective messaging
- Creating graphics, handouts and other communications materials
- Supporting special events, member visibility and broader caucus communications strategy
Qualifications
- Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Sound judgment in a fast-moving news and political environment
- Experience in communications, journalism, public relations, campaigns, government or a related field preferred
- Familiarity with AP style, social media strategy and Canva preferred
- Knowledge of Indiana media, state government or the legislative process is a plus
Compensation and benefits:
Starting salary is $45,000, with health insurance, retirement benefits, paid time off and a flexible hybrid schedule during the legislative interim. Candidates must be able to work in Indianapolis during session and in person during the interim as needed.
