Job Description
The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Professor of Practice of Public Policy (at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). This is a full-time, non-tenure-accruing faculty position to begin in August 2023 (but open to other starting dates). Candidates must have a distinguished record of public service and leadership in at least one of the following areas: local, state, or federal government agencies; international organizations; and non-profit or for-profit organizations dealing with public policy. Substantive expertise could include, but is not limited to: legislative process, Congress, and politics; climate/ environment policy; health policy; education policy; international development and humanitarian policy; national security policy; urban policy; regulation and budgeting; and inequality and poverty. Applicants from other areas are also encouraged to apply.
Candidates must be able to teach core or elective courses on major policy issues or leadership skills and mentor students on policy projects for real-world clients. Candidates should also be interested in undertaking applied public policy activities that contribute to and influence external domestic or global policy processes. They should be interested in engaging in work that can bridge leadership and public policy. Candidates should enhance Batten's profile within their area of expertise and also work across disciplines.
Training or professional experience in rigorous policy analysis, implementation, assessment, and/or policy uptake is required. The qualifying terminal degree in the field, or recognition for outstanding achievement, is required. Teaching or related experience (e.g., leading training, etc.) and a record of public impact publications (e.g., testimony, outreach and advocacy reports, op-eds, policy briefs, etc.) are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at UVA and beyond.
Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation's top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous education in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on acquiring leadership skills. Our faculty includes economists, political scientists, behavioral scientists, and professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The Batten School currently offers an MPP degree, an undergraduate major, a minor in public policy and leadership, and multiple dual degree programs with other UVA units.
Professor of Practice positions are fixed-term multi-year positions with the possibility of renewal. Renewable one to three-year terms are most common. Specific terms are dependent on qualifications, experience, and rank. Salaries, benefits, and support for research and pedagogic innovation are highly competitive.
