The Team You’ll Work With:

**NOTE: THIS ROLE IS LOCATED IN WASHINGTON, DC. **

The Office of Federal Affairs coordinates the City's interaction with the Federal administration and Congress. The office keeps the Mayor and City agencies informed about pending or important issues affecting the City. The office also advocates on behalf of the city and is the DC liaison between the City and other cities seeking to work together on federal issues.

The Problems You’ll Solve:
The Senior Advisor will report to the Director of Federal Legislative Affairs.

Duties of the Senior Advisor are, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a liaison between the New York City Congressional Delegation, White House, and Federal Agencies and Administration officials, and relevant City agencies and offices, to oversee projects, and develop and implement strategic outreach to elected officials and advocates in furtherance of Mayoral goals.
  • Coordinate with agencies, boards, commissions, organizations, and institutions relevant to Administration goals and policy initiatives, meet project goals and timelines, and review agency and interagency work product.
  • Provide administrative support and coordination, including preparation of correspondence and briefing memoranda, background research, and information for the Director of City Legislative Affairs.
  • Researching local, state, and federal laws, court decisions, and other legal documents, and working with the NYC Law Department to determine legal implications for various policy needs.

  • You can quickly absorb complex technical concepts and brief senior staff across City Hall.
  • You have thorough knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • You have exceptional written, oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • You have experience working with the agencies in the portfolio, a strong plus.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Graduate Degree (MPA/MS), preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience.

- You must have detailed knowledge of the Federal legislative process and elected officials. - You must have exceptional organizational, research, and analytic skills. - You have outstanding written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and presentation. - You can set and meet pressured deadlines to satisfy budget and financial plan preparation, update, and reporting requirements. - You should also possess the ability to manage multiple, often competing priorities, and manage staff effectively to ensure that properly skilled individuals are assigned to and satisfy specific needs. - You must have the ability and desire to travel to Washington during crucial points in the Federal legislative session. - You are proficient with MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Access, required. - You must be a self-motivator and be able to motivate others. - You must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
