JOB DESCRIPTION
The Barbara Lee Family Foundation / Barbara Lee Political Office / Lee Family Office seek a full-time Senior Communications Manager to set, guide, and implement organization-wide communications strategy, elevate and promote the organizations’ President, and lead a team of communications professionals.
The Senior Communications Manager a member of the senior leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director on communications-related priorities, opportunities, and challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and Planning
· In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement strategic communications plans that drive BLFF and BLPO’s public narrative across multiple platforms and elevates President’s voice and vision
· Work with Executive Director to enhance the organizations’ visibility and advance the organizations’ separate missions
· Assist Executive Director with long range communications strategy
Messaging and Media
· Lead the development of communications priorities and opportunities to best amplify the work of BLFF, BLPO, and their President
· Produce and execute project-specific communications plans, specifically related to research and public projects with partner organizations
· Expand the organizations’ and President’s presence in national press across various media by cultivating relationships with reporters, editors, and producers
· Capture President’s and Executive Director’s voices across multiple platforms
· Use sophisticated framing and messaging skills and help Communications Team produce and distribute press releases, op-eds, and other collateral
· Identify new strategies to elevate BLFF, BLPO, and the President’s voice in the public dialogue about women in politics
· Identify and build relationships with media contacts across the country
· Prepare President for media interviews and speaking engagements and draft initial responses when appropriate.
· You have a passion for media and can think of the perfect contact for pitches, based on their interests and what they have covered previously.
Digital Communications
· Oversee development and execution of online communications, including Twitter, Facebook, email strategy, and web presence
· Work with Communications Team to elevate BLFF, BLPO, and the President’s voice online
· Work with the Executive Director to drive and integrate digital strategy that articulates BLFF and BLPO missions and the President’s vision/thought leadership
Leadership and Management
· Lead, manage, and support communications staff including a Communications Associate and Digital Communications Associate
· Manage relationships with communications consultants
· Work directly with Executive Director and President
· Serve as backup when Communications Associate or Digital Communications Associate are out of the office
· Collaborate with the Program Director
· Manage and monitor reporting of key benchmarks for Communications Team
Project Management
· Serve as the project manager for Foundation projects, including but not limited to:
o All nonpartisan research
o Gender on the Ballot project
o Major speeches
Project management includes:
o Developing a detailed project plan to monitor and track project progress
o Maintaining a project calendar and coordinating with colleagues, vendors, and external partners to ensure timely execution of project deliverables
o Managing changes to scope and schedule by helping to troubleshoot roadblocks to progress.
Research
· Manage all research projects, including coordinating with any partner organizations
· Develop and maintain project calendars and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely execution of project deliverables
· Red-line all drafts from researchers and recommend updates to the BLFF team
· Draft BLFF research memos and manage their final production
· Coordinate the launch and distribution of the research (webinar, email blasts, etc.)
· Maintain a working knowledge of partner research in the political parity sphere, and educate the BLFF team on relevant projects
· Provide strategic recommendations for new research topics with a focus on timely, newsworthy projects that fit the BLFF brand
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Work Experience. 8+ years of professional experience, preferably at a related mission driven organization, political campaign, or government office. Experience working for an elected official or Principal is preferred. Experience pitching media contacts and earning placements. A track record of strategic project management and excellent research skills are essential. Strong command of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Creative, Strategic Thinking. Strong critical and strategic thinking abilities and attention to detail are required. Flexibility to juggle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and proven ability to think on your feet. Ability to remain calm during busy moments or when facing unexpected challenges.
- Management Experience. Ability to motivate and supervise your staff while managing up and being a key contributor to the overall team. Experience managing projects and ability to set and execute a strategy effectively are essential.
- Excellent Writing and Presentation Skills. In depth experience and proven ability to distill complex concepts into clear and impactful points both written and orally. Experience proofreading and copyediting for others.
- People Skills. Experience working for a dynamic principal strongly preferred. Having a clear understanding of protocol, a high sense of integrity, and discretion is absolute. Ability to be a team player with a positive mindset who is a conscious collaborator and can remain calm under pressure.
- Commitment to Mission-driven Work. An interest in women’s political participation and advancement is preferred. Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends when necessary.
