Job Summary: The Senior Community Organizer: 1. Develop and maintain the relationship with the press; 2. provide support to the SRO Families United Collaborative and oversee the Chinatown SRO Families Collaborative; 3. represent our organization and actively participate in city-wide coalitions; 4. support the Community Organizing Team (COT) on community issues.
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Location: Chinatown, San Francisco
Hours: Monday through Friday regular business hours, plus some nights and weekends
Salary: DOE; Comprehensive benefits
The Organization: A private non-profit founded in 1977, Chinatown Community Development Center believes in a comprehensive vision of community. We own and/or manage approximately 30 affordable housing buildings serving over 3,800 low-income seniors, single adults, formerly homeless adults, and families of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Tenderloin, Western Addition, and Polk Gulch neighborhoods. Job Responsibilities:
Build stronger relationship amongst SRO Families Collaborative's multicultural organizers and families:
- Provides general staffing support to the Chinatown SRO Families Collaborative, including but not limited to onboarding and provide supervision to the Chinatown’s SRO Project Coordinator and the SRO Families organizers.
- Monitor the implementation of the SRO Housing Voucher Program and the Q Foundation Rental Subsidy Program as well as providing support to the advocacy efforts on the SRO family housing subsidy program.
- Build capacity, develop, and empower tenant leaders particularly those residing in single room occupancy (SRO) hotels. Organize SRO tenants on housing justice, eviction defense, and tenant rights.
Work with Community Organizing Team (COT) on tenant organizing and empowerment:
- Work with COT to design and implement leadership development program
- Work with COT on organizing strategies and mobilizing tenants on community issues
Develop internal and external working relationships:
- Conduct media outreach and foster relationships with the press.
- Oversee coordination and manage the communications with the social and media channels.
- Develop content and messaging for media outreach on advocacy and organizing strategic plan.
Represent our organization and actively participate in city-wide coalitions and public policy efforts to further the goals and benefits for the community.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with tenant groups and community agencies and work collaboratively on addressing short-range and long-range community issues.
- Work with Community Organizing staff to coordinate input and support from grassroots constituents on other community-related issues.
- Represent organization in speaking out on community issues, in various housing coalitions and public policy efforts.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to speak fluent Cantonese and read and write Chinese and conduct workshops and meetings in English and Cantonese.
- Experience working with low-income immigrant neighborhoods and familiarity with issues relevant to the community.
- Strong creative and comprehensive problem-solving skills.
- Good listening skills and ability to exercise patience.
- Ability to work independently as well as in team structure environment.
- Commitment to comprehensive vision of community development and improving the life for low-income community.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, marketing, public relations or journalism, or related field.
- Bilingual in Cantonese and English.
- Basic word processing, Excel spreadsheet, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work flexible hours (evening and weekends).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in the Chinatown neighborhood and issues relevant to the community.
- Experience in media work.
- Bi-literate in Chinese and English.
- Familiarity with Chinese software programs and word processing.
- Two (2) years experience in non-profit agency serving low-income clients
- Ability to speak Mandarin.
