Senior Policy Fellow for Energy and Emerging Technology

Energy and emerging technology sit at the center of America's next quarter-century of growth. Decisions being made right now — on how we build energy infrastructure, how we power a wave of new demand, and how we govern breakthrough technologies like artificial intelligence — will determine whether the country unlocks a new era of abundance and opportunity or entrenches scarcity, gatekeeping, and stagnation. We are looking for a Senior Policy Fellow for Energy and Emerging Technology to help lead our thinking and shape the debate at exactly this intersection. 

As a Senior Policy Fellow, you will be a recognized subject-matter expert and a trusted voice — internally and externally — on how to remove the barriers that hold back energy investment and technological progress. You will develop the intellectual foundation for AFP's advocacy, translate rigorous analysis into policy that lawmakers can act on, and equip our teams across the country to win reforms that expand freedom and opportunity for every American. 

How You Will Contribute:

• Serve as a leading expert and thought leader on energy and emerging-technology policy, including electricity markets and grid reliability, permitting and infrastructure reform, nuclear and next-generation energy sources, artificial intelligence, data centers and computing demand, and the regulatory frameworks governing new technologies. 
• Develop original research, policy papers, testimony, and commentary that make the principled, evidence-based case for removing government barriers to energy abundance and permissionless innovation. 
• Translate complex technical and economic questions into clear, actionable policy recommendations for federal and state policymakers, coalition partners, and AFP's grassroots and legislative teams. 
• Advise senior leadership on strategy, emerging issues, and opportunities to advance durable reform, and help set the direction of AFP's energy and technology agenda. 
• Build and steward relationships with lawmakers and their staff, allied organizations, academics, industry experts, and the media to move ideas into policy. 
• Represent AFP publicly — in the press, before legislative bodies, at conferences, and in coalition settings — as a credible and persuasive voice. 
• Partner with government affairs, grassroots, communications, and state teams to ensure research and analysis directly support active campaigns and legislative fights. 
• Mentor and elevate other analysts and policy staff, raising the quality and ambition of the team's work. 

What You Will Bring:

• Deep subject-matter expertise in energy policy, technology policy, or a closely related field, with a demonstrated command of the relevant economics, regulatory landscape, and current debates. 
• A track record of producing high-quality, rigorous policy analysis or research that has influenced decision-makers or public debate. 
• The ability to translate technical complexity into clear, compelling writing and speaking for policymakers, journalists, and the public. 
• Strong strategic judgment — you can identify where reform is possible, anticipate second-order consequences, and prioritize the fights that matter most. 
• Comfort operating with independence in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift, and the initiative to drive projects from idea to impact. 
• A collaborative approach and the credibility to build trust with lawmakers, partners, and colleagues across a range of perspectives. 
• A commitment to advancing free-market, limited-government principles and a belief in the power of innovation and open competition to improve people's lives. 

Standout Candidates Will Bring:

• 8+ years of relevant experience in policy, government, research, academia, industry, or advocacy focused on energy or emerging technology. 
• An advanced degree in economics, public policy, law, engineering, a technical discipline, or a related field — or equivalent professional expertise. 
• Existing relationships with policymakers, allied organizations, or the media in the energy or technology space. 
• Prior experience shaping federal or state legislation or regulation. 
• A public record of published work, testimony, or media commentary on energy or technology policy.

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $180,000–$275,000 per year. This role may also be eligible for additional bonus compensation designed to align total compensation with an employee’s overall contribution to the organization.

Compensation decisions are informed by a variety of factors, including relevant experience, capabilities, demonstrated skills, role responsibilities, and expected contribution. Consistent with this approach, base salary may vary within or outside of the anticipated range based on these considerations.
