Position Description
POSITION: The Literacy Lab is seeking a dynamic, organized, full-time Program Manager to lead its early literacy intervention program in St. Louis, Missouri. The Program Manager is primarily responsible for implementing a nationally recognized early literacy intervention program by leading a team of full-time literacy tutors and literacy coaches in collaboration with partner school districts. The Program Manager oversees implementation fidelity and analyzes program data to ensure that the team makes a measurable impact on the literacy skills of students. The Program Manager is responsible for building and maintaining strategic relationships with school leaders, funders, and other partners leading to the long-term sustainability, growth, and success of the program. This leadership position is part of an entrepreneurial, fast-moving team in a high-performing nonprofit dedicated to closing the literacy achievement gap.
ABOUT THE LITERACY LAB: The Literacy Lab is a fast-paced, Washington, DC-based non-profit organization whose mission is to provide children from low-income communities with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills, leading to greater success in school and increased opportunities in life. We partner with school districts to add capacity in high-need schools to close the literacy achievement gap for children before third grade. The Literacy Lab will launch services in St. Louis, Missouri in August 2022.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Program Manager, who is based in St. Louis, MO and reports to the Regional Director in Kansas City, MO, is responsible for the following:
- Leading the implementation of The Literacy Lab’s early literacy intervention program in St.Louis, MO and ensuring fidelity to the research-based model in collaboration with local and national team members.
- Building and managing relationships with principals, school district officials, supporters, and individual school and partner sites, including managing school partner contracts.
- In partnership with a full-time Program Associate, managing, supporting, and building relationships with a Coaching Specialist and a cohort of full-time Literacy Lab tutors while creating a positive, meaningful, and motivating environment for all team members.
- Helping with the annual recruitment, hiring, and placement of a diverse team of high-performing, full-time Literacy Lab tutors, in partnership with the national recruitment team based in Washington, DC.
- Ensuring compliance with all AmeriCorps grant requirements, including successful achievement of grant metrics.
- Analyzing tutor outcomes to drive success and make programmatic improvements; working closely with Coaching Specialists to use data to monitor the success of tutors and students.
- Serving as an ambassador to build support for The Literacy Lab with prospective funders, schools, community partners, and local and state government officials through site visits, events, and intentional relationship cultivation.
- Establishing local office arrangements and supporting office management.
- Seeking out and creating opportunities for programmatic expansion to reach more children.
- Supporting national efforts and projects for program improvement and innovation as needed.
- Other duties to promote the success of the program, as assigned.

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010 (or later) software (especially Word and Excel)
- and G-Suite (Google) tools.
- Ability to learn or previous experience using computer-based systems (Salesforce, PowerBI,
- Dropbox, etc.)
- Experience working in nonprofit management, education, a related field or with high-need
- communities preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree (at minimum)
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:The salary range for this position is $58,000-$63,000. Benefits include a flexible work environment, employer-paid health and dental insurance, vision coverage, employer-paid short and long-term disability insurance, employer-paid life insurance, a commuter benefits plan, a 403b retirement plan, and paid vacation.
WORK LOCATION: This position will be based in the St. Louis, MO area.
WORK DEMANDS: This position has hybrid work flexibility (blend of required in-person work and some remote activities/periods). This position may require out-of-town travel of approximately 8-12 nights per year for meetings, training, and staff events.
