Staff Assistant/Driver – The Office of Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) and House Veterans’ Affairs (HVAC) seeks a Staff Assistant / Driver to support the Member Office’s operations efforts.
The Staff Assistant / Driver greets visitors, answers the phone, drives the Member, and answers constituent requests for general information including tour and flag requests. This position also monitors delivery and pickup of materials, maintains the front office, and assists with various administrative, operations and legislative duties. The staff member in this role interacts regularly with constituents and should have a friendly, helpful demeanor. The ideal candidate is a team player, strong writer and researcher, skilled listener and communicator, detail-oriented, organized, responsive and accessible, a creative problem solver, and self-motivated.
The candidate should be capable of managing time effectively and prioritizing assignments with tact. The position requires the individual to be available for extended and unscheduled hours (including mornings/nights, weekends and/or holidays). This is an entry level position.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, and a vehicle.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Manages the front office;
· Answers and screens telephone calls for the Congresswoman and other staff members and takes messages when appropriate;
· Greets and screens visitors;
· Provides staff-led tours of the Capitol, The White House and other identified agencies for constituents and other guests;
· Assists persons who have meetings with the Congresswoman or the staff;
· Works closely with the Congresswoman’s Scheduler to ensure that the Member’s appointments are on time and that the Scheduler, and member’s team are aware of the visitor's arrival;
· Maintains literature regarding the district and House offices for distribution to visitors;
· Purchases supplies for the office from the House Office Supply store as instructed by the Office Manager;
· Signs for deliveries and forwards all materials delivered to the office to appropriate staff members in a timely manner;
· Ensures that requests for assistance are directed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner;
· Documents visitor opinions on issues communicated via telephone, including full name, address, and all relevant information as appropriate;
· Performs or coordinates administrative assignments with interns;
· Performs special projects assigned by the Congresswoman or Chief of Staff;
· Maintains a good working relationship with the Congresswoman, Chief of Staff, department staff, and constituents;
· Accepts performance-based criticism and direction;
· Possesses a temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;
· Meets attendance requirements as established by the office;
· Works well under pressure and handles stress;
· Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends as needed according to the Congressional schedule;
· Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Must possess a bachelor’s degree. Congressional experience, including internships, is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related experience or training in public administration, project management, or hospitality is preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Starting salary range is $50,000 annually.
