Job Description
The office of Congressman Pat Ryan seeks a Staff Assistant / Legislative Correspondent:
The Staff Assistant/Legislative Correspondent (SA/LC) will play a key dual role in Congressman Ryan’s Washington, D.C. office — directly interfacing with constituents and visitors, managing the office’s correspondence program, and hiring and managing the interns. This position is ideal for a hardworking, team-oriented individual interested in gaining substantive experience in both constituent services and the legislative process.
Primary responsibilities include greeting visitors and answering phone calls, processing and drafting responses to constituent correspondence, managing flag and tour requests, and supporting the Member’s legislative and communications teams with research and correspondence. The SA/LC will also help oversee the internship program, maintain office supplies, and support daily office operations.
Duties include:
- Managing incoming constituent mail and drafting timely, accurate responses on a wide range of legislative issues.
- Answering phones, greeting visitors, and serving as the first point of contact for constituents.
- Coordinating U.S. Capitol tours, flag requests, and other constituent services.
- Assisting with administrative operations, including managing supplies, incoming physical mail, and general office organization.
- Supporting the Member’s legislative staff by monitoring constituent correspondence trends, conducting basic policy research, and preparing background materials.
- Coordinating and supervising the office’s internship program.
- Assisting with special projects and events as assigned by the Chief of Staff or Legislative Director.
This position requires excellent writing and interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to providing outstanding service to the people of New York’s 18th Congressional District. Successful candidates will be proactive, organized, and eager to learn.
Ideal candidates will have:
- Previous experience working or interning on Capitol Hill, in government, or in community engagement roles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ties to New York or the Hudson Valley are preferred but not required.
The pay range for this position is $50,000 – $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This position is based in Washington, D.C., with occasional travel to the district as needed, and reports to the Legislative Director.
The office is an equal opportunity employer; we do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation. Candidates of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, writing sample, and references in a single PDF to ny18resumes@mail.house.gov with the job title and your full name in the subject line (e.g., “Staff Assistant/Legislative Correspondent – First Last”). Applicants will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
