Temporary Communications Specialist
SUMMARY
Leroy Hamilton
The Temporary Communications Specialist works with the Director of Communications and Communications Manager to implement the department’s overall media goals and objectives. This includes, but is not limited to, cultivating and maintaining working relationships with media, scheduling and facilitating media visits, assisting with the development of content as a member of the social media team, and acting as project manager for select filming and media events. Manages logistical planning for media events. Supports the Communication Department’s efforts to plan and implement the strategic media relations program for the California Science Center’s exhibits and educational programming, expansion projects, IMAX Theater, and ExploraStore.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in public relations, communications or a related field.
- Experience working for a museum, science center, informal education institution, or nonprofit organization is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to obtain media coverage in a competitive market.
- Excellent writing and editing with a creative flair.
- Ability to assess good visual and audio opportunities for media.
- Experience with project management in communications, marketing or related field.
- A passion to learn; and an enthusiastic team player with strong relationship-building skills.
- Experience working with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- Awareness of best social media practices is desirable.
- Multi-task oriented with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe, and social media tools.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule - some weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), evenings and early mornings.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proactively create media outreach opportunities and cultivate relationships with media. Maintain and build media contact lists.
- Host media on site in response to inquiries. Facilitate interviews between media and Science Center spokespeople.
- Assist in the development of messaging and campaign strategies.
- Develop and edit press releases and other media materials.
- Archive and organize digital, print, radio, and television clips and reports of media coverage.
- Serve as an active member of the social media team.
- Assist with logistics for news conferences, media briefings and media previews for exhibition launches, communications programs and events. Supervise volunteers and select staff/consultants during media events.
- Assist with logistical planning for news conferences, media previews, IMAX premieres, and other media events as needed.
- Respond to media inquiries.
- Perform other duties as required.
COMPENSATION
$33.00 - $35.00 / Hour
