Job Description

Co-coordination of Project Green Reach (PGR), an exciting, challenging, fast-paced, hands-on science program for Title I schools in Brooklyn. Established in 1989, PGR has served tens of thousands of children from kindergarten through middle school. During the summer, PGR’s gardening and science-based Junior Botanist and Plant Investigator program serves rising 5th through 8th graders.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach lessons virtually and in person at BBG and in public and nonpublic schools.
  • Assist with school year program administration and curriculum development.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance, supply ordering, and management of online resources.
  • Prepare for and cofacilitate teacher workshops and summer/fall family events (virtually or in person).
  • Communicate with principals, teachers, summer student families, supply vendors, bus company, and BBG staff and volunteers.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor seasonal instructors, Garden Guide volunteers, and other assigned personnel in leading inquiry-based tours at BBG.
  • Coordinate summer 2022 Junior Botanist and Plant Investigator application process and develop and teach curriculum for Junior Botanist summer program.
  • Collaborate in the development and delivery of summer staff training program.
  • Plant and maintain vegetable garden spring through fall in the Children’s Garden.
  • Share Education staff responsibilities for plant maintenance in BBG’s Education Greenhouses.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed. 

Qualifications:

  • Two years’ formal or nonformal teaching experience
  • One year of horticulture experience, including vegetable gardening
  • Experience teaching virtually and/or using virtual platforms like Zoom
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Competence with computer word processing, spreadsheets, internet, etc.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to work outside in all weather, and to perform horticultural tasks for garden maintenance (lifting, bending, carrying, digging)
  • Proficiency in a second language a plus
