Job Description
SUMMARY: State Senator Tan Parker (SD-12) is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, full-time Policy Analyst for the 90th Legislative Session. Senator Parker serves as Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation, and the Policy Analyst will support a demanding and wide-ranging legislative portfolio. The position will conduct policy research, track legislation, assist in drafting bills and bill analyses, prepare vote recommendations, and staff the Senator in committee and on the Senate floor. The ideal candidate has previous legislative experience, strong research skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct policy research and develop legislation for the Senator's assigned policy areas;
- Draft bills, amendments, and bill analyses in coordination with the Texas Legislative Council;
- Analyze proposed legislation and prepare vote recommendations;
- Prepare briefings, talking points, and memos for the Senator on legislative issues;
- Staff the Senator in assigned committee hearings and during floor debate;
- Monitor and report on floor activity and activity in assigned committees;
- Meet with constituents, stakeholders, agency staff, and other legislative offices;
- Assist with responding to constituent correspondence on policy matters;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff, and Capitol Director
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPECTATIONS:
- Thorough knowledge of the Senate legislative process and procedure;
- Excellent research, analytical, oral, and written communication skills;
- Working knowledge of Texas Legislative Council applications (TLIS, LDR, etc.);
- Ability to draft legislation and legislative amendments;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines and work extended hours, including nights and weekends during session;
- Strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive information;
- Prior Texas legislative experience is strongly preferred;
- Bachelor's degree required; coursework or experience in public policy, government, or law is a plus.
