About the position

This is a locally engaged staff position at an overseas Australian Diplomatic Mission.

The Permanent Mission of Australia to the United Nations in New York is seeking applications to fill various roles for Advisers and Senior Advisers on a non-ongoing basis for 6 months to 2 years, with possibility of contract extension. An active order of merit will be created and maintained for 18 months to fill current and future vacancies.

Working under limited direction, the positions contribute to advancing Australia's interests at the United Nations in sustainable development, humanitarian affairs, international peace and security, political affairs, and/or human rights.

The positions conduct research and analysis, develop policy advice, attend, monitor and report on UN meetings and policy issues, negotiate on behalf of Australia, represent Australia’s positions at formal and informal meetings, and Advocate Australia’s priorities through strategic communications and public diplomacy engagements. The positions may manage partnerships with other UN Member States, multilateral or civil society organisations, and coordinate Mission-wide engagement on specific policy issues, country files, and cross-cutting themes including diversity, inclusion, disability equity, Middle East issues, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, counter-terrorism, gender equality and climate change.

Work Authorisation Requirements

Applicants for this position must apply for a G-1 visa on the basis of an offer of employment if they do not already fall into one of the employment eligibility categories below:
  • Australian Citizen with permanent residency (Green Card holder)
  • Already in possession of a G-1 Spousal Visa
G-1 visas are valid for 5 years and are renewable provided you are still gainfully employed in your position.

Additional Information

This position is a designated security assessed position. Applicants must be an Australian, American, British, Canadian, or New Zealand citizen to be eligible for engagement. Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the employee having or acquiring a valid DFAT recognised security clearance. Security clearances can take several months to process, and employment cannot be commenced until an appropriate clearance is confirmed. There is no guarantee that the successful candidate for the position will be successful in obtaining a clearance. The inability to obtain a clearance prevents that applicant from being employed and loss of a security clearance at any time will lead to termination of employment.
