About the position
The United States (US) Media and External Relationships Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining Australian Government relationships with media, think tanks and other external bodies to advance Australia’s national interests, policy priorities and influence in the United States. This involves translating policy priorities into communications campaigns and programs, including events and activities that advance Australia’s interests. The position is required to cultivate partnerships and other opportunities with journalists and other stakeholders and work across the Embassy on our public-facing strategies and associated events. This position reports directly to the Director of Strategic Communications and the Minister Counsellor (Strategic Communications, who is an Australian diplomat) working under limited direction with some autonomy. This position will be required to work outside of normal business hours, including weekends.

Performance Management
Locally engaged staff engaged in an ongoing or fixed term capacity are eligible to participate in the performance management system. Staff who are employed on 31 March, are preforming at the required levels, and have worked in the role for at least 100 working days are eligible to receive a salary advancement of one increment OR a bonus of two percent if at the top of their level.

Work Authorisation Requirements
Applicants for this position may be eligible to apply for an A-2 visa on the basis of an offer of employment if they do not already fall into one of the employment eligibility categories listed:

- Valid US employment authorization
- Please note that A2 visas are valid for a period of 5 years and are non-renewable. Also, accompanying dependants of LES A2 visa cannot request work authorisation in the United States.
Additional Information
This position requires a probity check to be completed. Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the employee having or acquiring a valid DFAT probity check. Probity checks can take some time to process, and employment cannot be commenced until an appropriate check is confirmed. There is no guarantee that the successful candidate for the position will be successful in obtaining a probity check. The inability to obtain a probity check prevents that applicant from being employed and loss of a probity check at any time will lead to termination of employment.
