Job Description

The Firm

Lot Sixteen is looking for a Vice President to join a smart and strategic team of government affairs professionals. In this role, ownership of and accountability for planning and executing work across a wide variety of functions will be required.

We are a proactive bunch. We translate our words into actions. We insist on knowing what we are talking about. We view the identification of a problem or task as only the first of many steps required to get results. We prioritize solutions, develop detailed work plans, secure approval to execute those plans and get to work on implementation. We eat elephants, one bite at a time. We worry, so clients don’t have to. And we want this same approach from the person who takes this job.

We are building an agency that feels like home, a team of friends who support each other as much as they challenge each other, and a client base whose trust and confidence in us is earned every day. At Lot Sixteen, we prioritize quality, we adore smart thinking, and we are actively working to cultivate a more diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment. Accordingly, we strive to meet or exceed all the standard work perks and expectations, including:

  • Competitive salary
  • Generous benefits, including:
  • Health and Dental Plan
  • Retirement Plan with company matching
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • All-you-can-eat snacks and all-you-can-drink coffee
  • Colleagues who welcome your family & friends and recognize that balancing both worlds is an essential ingredient to happiness
  • A downtown Washington, D.C. office location on McPherson Square, near 15th & K St. NW

The Role

A Vice President of Government Affairs at Lot Sixteen has a fairly diverse set of responsibilities, including a leadership role in:

  • Representing clients’ interests before Congress, executive branch agencies, and other entities in Washington.
  • Informing clients of bill introductions, amendment filings, regulatory actions, votes and other key developments in Washington through written memos and phone calls.
  • Incorporating analysis into high-quality, client-facing communications.
  • Conducting policy-oriented research and presenting findings to clients in presentations or written materials.
  • Contributing to the development of advocacy plans and helping to drive forward the process of executing tasks associated with those plans.
  • Drafting, reviewing and editing written content and materials.
  • Utilizing, creating and/or updating various databases.
  • Monitoring congressional floor, committee and individual member office activities.
  • Acting as a source of counsel to SVPs, EVPs and Partners.
  • Seeking to generate new business for the firm.

The Candidate

Did we just become best friends? Well... yeah... if you’re someone who:

  • Knows how to balance competing demands with composure, smarts and confidence
  • Has cultivated a real expertise on a particular set of issues
  • Likes the idea of representing and protecting clients' business, reputational and policy interests
  • Can’t help yourself but to build coalitions of similarly-situated people or organizations
  • Understands U.S. federal policy development and implementation processes
  • Feels an obligation to keep people in the loop, rather than cut them out of it
  • Prides yourself in looking around corners, evaluating scenarios and being prepared
  • Finds fulfillment in developing and implementing solutions to problems that feel unsolvable
  • Likes to lend a hand when you see someone who needs help
  • Finishes what you start, without anyone checking up on you
  • Cares deeply about your professional relationships and works hard to strengthen them
  • Enjoys writing, and is good at it (presentations, memos, media pitches, op-eds, general talking points, blog and social media posts and zinger txt msgs)
  • Thrives on meeting new people and has an affinity for storytelling
  • Prefers engaging in the policymaking process to opining on it
  • Prioritizes well in a fast-paced, demanding environment

You are most likely to thrive in this role if you have at least eight years of experience. We care less about where or how long you went to school than we do about how eager you are to continue learning. Experience in public service – on the Hill, in the military, at an agency or otherwise – would be outstanding. So would deep knowledge of and curiosity about the business implications of changes to public policy and the nuances of natural resources and related policy. Equally important: a willingness to admit what you don’t know and go find the answers. It is not a requirement for the candidate who will take on this role to bring a book of business with them, but bringing clients in or working toward gaining clients after joining the firm is, of course, a plus.

The ideal candidate has knowledge of and abilities in the following:

  • Possesses a working knowledge of the Federal permitting process for mining projects, and tracks Congressional action related to and implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act, General Mining Law of 1872, Federal Land Policy and Management Act, National Historic Preservation Act and other statutes governing permitting of mineral development on Federal lands.
  • Understanding of the federal appropriations process.
  • Working knowledge of federal energy policy, including the intersection with digital infrastructure.
